Is this SeriouS ???!!! Rust!!

wz up guys, well i heard a ratteling noise on the back on my dearly lancer and notice the hangar of my muffler snaped , so when i looked underneath i saw this:

if u notice where the hangar snap there s a nice rust spot caused by the weilder who did it. I would like to hear some opinion on whether how bad this is. can this spread?
what products u guys reccommend to fix this? i got some ideas but i would like to see u guys feedback before i take any actions. Thanks

well, its an aftermarket one, as you can see it a bit back this was done a whileee back., I know of my errors and how foolish i was to let him do that there,( thats what happen when ur a newb) after some research i found various products that can at least stop the rust and prevent it from spreading . I also have plans to remove that cheap muffler and replace it with one that goes where it suppose to go or fix that one and make some extensions since its smaller.

My family and i restore older GM's cars and the product that we found that works the best and lasted the longest was POR 15 it's easy to put on and comes in all different colors. It's kinda expensive but not to bad considering how good it is. just get a throw away brush and a plastic glove go over rust area with a wire brush to get off the loose stuff then paint over it. also when you go to paint put the paint in a smaller throw away container if you want to save some and put some plastic wrap under the lid when you shut it. it get's as hard as a rock when it set's up and has lasted sa long time so long it's leasted 7 year's under my dad's vette which we use to drive in the winter so it has see's salt. Good luck

Yah if you are worried about the underneath of your car rusting i would definetly invest into por 15 i used it on my front and rear suspension it works awesome and looks good at the same time.

No big deal really. It was the weld that rusted and the area around it, which was stripped of paint prior to welding. Yes it will spread but so slowly it's not worth worrying about. I mean, maybe in 10 years it will start to affect something structural. Just hit it with a wire wheel or blasting media, reweld it, and paint it. And when you're done that, stop thinking about it.

10 years? what do you drive my lancer 02 has rust starting in the fenders in 2 places same spot both sides most of the newer car's metal is of a cheaper grade and it rusts a lot faster and it's thinner so takes less time to make a hole

I hear that VW start to rust after about 2 years of owning. Then the tires explode randomly.

On a side note I will invest in this POR 15, for when I get my coilovers.

I live in NJ where we get our share of snow and road salt. My lancer has no rust yet, and I owned my previous car for nine years before it developed a rust spot. Modern cars are actually much better when it comes to corrosion. Where do you guys live that it's so bad?
