Back on topic, has anyone done this repair. I do not what to pull the dash out. Mainly because it never goes in right EVER again.

Anyone with tips or tricks on doing the repair. Parts should be $50. I feel i should be able to knock this out but i really dont want to pull out the dash.

Well This is the first major problem with the car since I bought i new in 03.
I 've done all the other maintance up to now (belts, brakes, ect)
The car only has 68000 miles on it, and it's my daily driver.

the warrenty was only for 3 year / 36,000 miles, now if it was an 05 this wouldn't be a problem right now. If I would have known about this back in 05 when the TSB came out I would have had the dealer change it out when I completed all the recalls on the car.

So when the dealer asked me do you have an extended warrenty when I was getting penciled in. I should have known... aw damn this is going to cost a lot. So when I got the call saying it's going to cost me 2000+ for repairs I said areyou crazy, that's almost what the car costs if I sold it today?

I will most likely get the car fixed, but not till after my wedding next year in May, but who knows by then I might I want to trade it in. (I do like the new ralliart lancer)

As for right now the dealer mechanic was nice enough to force the Blend door open to the heat side to get me though this upcoming Ohio winter. So I figure as long as I don't change the settings I should be fine for the winter.

I think I should at least change out the old pollen filter and put in the Carbon air filter can I get to it with out taking the dash out?

ducked my head under the dash today to see what everyone was talking about. And it was pretty much in right there, i'm refering to gear that switches the blend door.

I dont know which way to turn it to allow heat to come in tho. I mainly need the heat to work so my GF can get by this winter, i'll pull the dash out in the spring time.

It just so happens knob brok dead in the middle and i dont want to force it the wrong way. I grabbed the gear wheel to move it and it was pretty firm on it to begin with.

I have the same issue on my 03 EVO. Haven't done the fix yet though. And as for the gas mileage discussion, I get 18 MPG when I'm stepping on it around town...

Here is a thread with the complete bulletin: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/mi...hard-turn.html

This is literally a 5 minute fix. The tension is really relieved a lot just by doing the gears.
I'm going to try replacing the gears from under the dash. Some say it has fixed it for them and others have not. If indeed I can fix it this way I will then look into adding the filter. Not going to attempt the TSB or the $2K fix at the dealer even on a car worth 18K.

Fixed by replacing gears with new design. Part # 7801A110

Cost: $22.

Time: About 10 minutes.

Stick your head under the steering wheel and turn the heater knob. You should see the cable flex when you turn it to heater. Once you add the newer design gears there is less resistance and the cable is able to push the gear over to heat rather than just flexing.

Doubt I'll be adding filter as it cost about $60-$70

i crawled under there. made it HOT for now as the winter season is coming. I would order the new gears but we still have a broken HVAC knob at the moment. I'm waiting it out on ebay till i can get one. Or we can just live with HOT in the winter and then i'll bring it to MAX cold in the summer. Save $100 for the HVAC unit.
