High Revving

Hey everyone,

I just picked up my new 2011 Lancer SE last week and I've noticed an odd issue with it after I start it up. My vehicle is a standard and when I park at work or at home I'm usually on an incline. Do to this instead actually puting the vehicle in gear, I just put it into reverse, keep the clutch down and let it roll out. When this happens I'll see the engine start revving up to 3,000rpm and it seems to rev harder the more I push on the brake pedal. I'm 99% sure that I'm not pushing on the gas pedal at the same time when I'm stepping on the brake. Any ideas? I've contacted my local dealership and they don't have any ideas without me bringing it in.

Thanks!

yeah yeah :P, anyways, finally had a service manager take a look at it. He stated that the computer is forcing the RPM's up higher when it's rolling in neutral and that this is completely normal if the engine is cold. Something to do with if the vehicle is moving the computer will move the rpm's up to assist in shifting. Also stated that if I had an auto, I'd never notice it. Still don't think I like it revving to 3000rpm when it's -20c outside, but ohwell, if the engine blows up then at least I've got proof I complained about it multiple times

you failed to say it was cold in your first post. The engine will run at higher RPM to get the O2 sensors warm so it can go into closed loop quicker. I have not had the car at -20, but mine will rev to 1500 rpm approx @ anytime when cold.

I fully understand and accept it revving to 1500 and even 2000 when it's -5 or so. However, when it's revving to 3000 or more, that's what gets me worried. At the end of the day, the dealership has acknowledged that what I'm seeing and have said it's normal, so...if any problems arise from it revving that high, they're on the hook for it

Aluminum Block, -20C, Yes it will rev naturally at 3,000 rpm until it gets enough heat. Try an OBDII reader with graphs of everything.

3000 is too high. lol cause the sound from your car reving that high with an exhaust on it is funny to think about.

More seriously.... I highly recommend that you bring it to another dealership and have them track down the problem. Because an engine with the problem has the ability to affect other systems and parts around it negatively. It is usually a sign that something is wrong.

I would not put all your faith in the dealer because they may blame the matter on something else.

Get them to put it in clear writing what tests they did and why they think its normal.
