OZ Rally work.... need advice
OK, just got an 02 Lancer OZ about 2-weeks ago for my girlfriend.
had a few blown fuses and had to rewire the radio (she didnt like having to press the power button to turn it off after turning the car off. lol)
I looked it over, but i'm a novice at working on Mitsubishi's, well any car really. Mostly, I've worked on early `90 Honda's
Well, she go pulled over for license plate light being out. Come to find out, it didn't have one. Easy fix, but then noticed the passenger side headlight was shorting out when on high.
I knew the car had body repair. the front and back bumper were replacements, and the back was painted with touch up spray paint. When i was fixing the connector to the head lights, i noticed something wrong. They had used a piece of wire to hold something, for the light, to the frame, next to the belt on the passenger side (looks like a cylinder step-up transformer for the lights?? PLEASE forgive me for the lack of knowledge).
I think it actually mounts to the frame under the passenger headlights. At least that's where i found a bolt and bracket that held it. It was close to the belt and looked like it was one speed bump from falling into the belt and pully.
While I was wiring in the license plate light, i noticed that there was a few wires that look like they had caught on fire. The coating was burnt but not too bad.
I don't think it was wrecked, at least not badly, but i'm concerned.
It runs good for now. Did have to replace the connectors for the battery because of corrosion. And i need to look at the IAC, because it will rev up to about 3K when starting it in cold weather, then drop back to about 500-750 after it warms up.
Anyways, what should I do next. I plan to change all the fluids this week. What else?
Any help is good help for me.
Okay, got some pictures...finally.
.
I don't know what this is, maybe a ballast for the lights. at least that 's what I thought.
I mounted it under the front passenger headlight. I guess thats where it goes. An unused bolted was there so i went for it.
It was here nest to the pulley... didn't look safe.

Here are the rest of the pix...

Not much to look at, but i want to learn to work on it myself.

CLean out your throttle body really good and check for any vacuum leaks. One of these is usually the culprit with idle like that. Might want to run along the wiring harnesses under the hood to be sure you dont have exposed wires somewhere to be on the safe side If you could take a pic of the transformer looking thing we might be able to tell you what it is. Could be an aftermarket ballast or something if it had HID at some point.
Yeah... its a bad wiring mess and on top of that, whoever put all the interior together (dash, console, etc.,) used the least amount of screws. Half of it doesn't have any screws, its just clipped falls apart. lol.... i'm going to have lots of fun with this.
I plan to take a pictures this Saturday and Sunday, while my brother is down for the holidays. He wants to get into paint & body repairs, so i think i have his first project.
I'll post the pix early next week.
And i will clean the throttle body, check for vacuum leaks, and find any exposed wires and give updates of my findings.
Thanks guys.

lol... I think i know why the cruise control doesn't work now. lol
when the on/off is pressed it will show the "cruise" light, but wont set...
My GF drives longs distance (100+ miles round trip) each weekend and it would be helpful.
I have noticed bad wiring and shorting in a few places so that may be the problem.
I mounted it under the car, but where does it actually go? and what goes in the front wheel-well?
Thanks for the input.
