03 lancer es trouble starting

Hello, I'm looking for some help diagnosing my lancer. In the last week its been starting a little slow; one, two, or three turns before it kicks in. I've checked the cold battery voltage (12.8V) and the running voltage (14.2V), the ground from the electrical box looks fine. I still need to check the voltage after its been sitting for a while before I try to start it. Its been suggested that I might need to replace the starter motor. How can I tell if the starter is going before dropping $100 on a new one? What else should I check? I looked around the forums for a similar case, and found one where someone was having trouble starting while the engine was hot, but it didnt answer my question about diagnosing the starter motor. Any help is appreciated!

To be honest it might be your ignition switch itself.

I had a similar problem with mine, then it got to where I would turn the key and nothing would happen. Did some research and found out after extensive testing it was the ignition switch.

I installed a push button start in my car and all starting problems have went away.

It's fairly easy to wire in. The switch I got was $15 shipped and works perfect. Looks stock also. I took out the cig lighter and installed it there.

I can almost guarantee that's your issue.

Is there any way to check if the ignition switch is the problem? I suppose I could open it up and cross the wires myself...

Yep with your volt meter.

With the kety in the on position, check the ignition wire, then turn to the start position and check the starter wire.

With on Ignition should read 12volts and on the start position the Starter wire should read 12 volts.

wire / color / polarity / location....

12volts white + ignition harness

Starter black/yellow + ignition harness

Ignition black/white + ignition harness

Accessory blue/black + ignition harness

Second Accessory blue/white + ignition harness
Notes: Not required for remote start.
Keysense blue ignition harness
Notes: The wire rests at ground with the key out of the ignition cylinder, and goes to an open circuit when the key is inserted.
