If the a/c system is just low on refrigerant, then yes, recharging the system will work. However if you have a leak, it won't last long. I've been told by longtime tech's that the refrigerant can gradually seep out if not used for long periods of time, if that's the case you have to have the air evacuated from the system with a machine designed to do just that. It pumps in refrigerant in one port, and draws the air out of the other, most shops have them.
Yep, the stuff is a bit pricey though, and if you do it you'd need a gauge to measure the pressure of the system(some of the cans come with them) compared to the outside air temp. The one thing you don't want to do is over pressurize the system, that will definitely give you problems.
