A few problems: Engine sounds Louder, sometimes car wont start, and lower fuel econ
Hey Guys & Gals,
I have been experiencing a few things wrong with my car. First of all, I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Gts with a CVT tranny and 2.0 L engine. I have no performance mods installed and purchased it at 76000km. It now has 130000km on it.
So Ive been experiencing 3 problems.
The first is 'engine' noise. Im not entirely sure if it is the engine, hence the quotations. I encounter this problem when trying to reach 100 kph. The rpm will go up to 3000ish and will sound very loud (like a more prominent hum). It also feels as if I have less power then when i purchased it, like it takes more to get it up to speed.
The second is my car sometimes wont start. Ill turn the ignition and it will sound normal as if it is going to start but wont actually fire up. However, most times when I try a second time it will start up. It doesn't sound like a dead battery. This happens when my car hasnt run for about 8-12 hours (overnight). The first time I encountered this problem was last year around this time. It happens both in the summer and winter.
The third problem I have is my fuel economy has decreased. I used to get 5-6 L per 100km traveled at an avg speed of 100kph but now it is approximately 8-9 L which is considerably more.
I dont really know what to make of this information. I dont really understand the mechanics of vehicles and dont really have a lot of money to fork out right now (Currently I am a co-op student). I would really appreciate any information or insight given to help to with these issues. I am good at following directions if someone can help.
I love my car and strongly dislike that she is feeling ill
Please help!
Kind Regards,
Lino from Canada

You need someone who has some mechanical knowledge to have a look at it. Do you have a scan tool to possible check for DTC's? Could be many things. Transmission/Vacuum leak, valve set out, failed injector, ect. Your fuel economy is most likely related to the power issue you have. Also, 5-6L per 100K? Lucky. I never get more than 8.5, and thats 70% highway.
As for the starting issue you need a multimeter and a test light. When it doesn't start you need to check the signal wire to the starter. If it only happens just once, then it will be tricky. Could be a relay or starter most likely.
