engine noise at idle

i have an '02 auto lancer and at idle when in gear (never when in park) there is an odd sound, sometimes. it sounds like a rough idle or possibly a vibration. when i give it gas it stops. it does not always happen and is worst when the engine is cold but will also do it when warm. i recently replaced the plugs - dealer said that was the problem, or a dirty air filter - but it didn't change and the dealer now says they don't know and don't seem too interested in figuring it out. also, i checked the air filter and it is pretty clean. anyone have any ideas? thanks for your help.

i get a noise too, but its something jiggling under the hood, like a wire or plastic tapping from the car idling. I dont worry about anymore.

read some of the other posts there is a few of you with this problem...i had it too, same with almost every us lancer owner that i know with a standerd tranny and over 20000km. ITs problaby your throw out bearing...push the clutch in when your idling, if it goes away thats what it it.

Did you not read the fact he has an automatic?

I have had the same rattle too, I always assumed it was my short ram intake. Either way, I wouldnt get too stressed about it....

When I drove my lancer up to Michigan from Texas I noticed my car was doing it ALOT (the weather was cold up there like 30s... Now that I'm back here I haven't noticed it much at all. It sounded exactly like you guys are describing it. It also did it in Reverse.

But it would only seem to do it when I held the break down, when I left off the break it would go back to idling smoothly.
