Muffler rattling

I just noticed that the metal that holds the muffler in place is attached to a rubber ball-like thing, so whenever I start the car or going on a rough road, the muffler starts to rattle. I noticed this because a friend of mine point it out that my muffler was shaking, and so I went under the car and checked, and saw that its literally held in place with a piece of rubber I'm going to a local muffler shop, and getting rid of the rubber attachment and ask them if I can get something more stable. Just wanted you guys to know another stupid mechanical mistake that the Mitsubishi coporation makes on designing their Lancer, so much disappointment Oh well, I still love my car.

ur muffler is supposed to move. the rubber piece is just like a lil shock. i mean think about if your car didn't have shocks and struts or springs, just a solid piece of metal. think about how bad the ride could be. but yea the motor moves the car moves and if that exhaust doesn't move ur gonna cause serious damage and shorten the life of ur exhaust system. uhm you might want to get it check out 4real though to see if its mounted incorrectly or damaged possibly

Yeah. I would go thru Mitsu. It may be a warranty issue or something. May save you money. Mine doesn't "rattle". It may move, but it doesn't make any noise.

Oh no, it doesn't make a rattling sound. It just shakes, especially when i first start the engine. I know it's supposed to do that, due to the rubber attachment, but I was wondering whether or not if I should replace the rubber attachment and use a metal one instead. I dunno any other car that has a "shock" for their muffler, but guess I just haven't seen enough cars in my life

Mine rattles too. I took it back to the muffler shop and they told me that it needs to do that or you can start breaking stuff up front. Unless you get a cat back system i would leave it. I had the problem with one of the brakets breaking on mine. So i really got a good look at what was causeing the rattleing. Its not evcen noticeable outside the car. Its not doing any damage. Unlkess it gets really bad i'd just leave it.

if you got an afterstock muffler, it is prob shaking because there is a large distance between the end of the muffler and the first attachment spot. I had my installer weld in an extra attachment spot RIGHT after the muffler "tube".

I don't know any car that don't have their exhaust hung up on rubbers.
If it ain't ratteling, leave it alone.
If it sways alot, get down there and try to reduce the sway.
Otherwise, leave it alone. Please!

blaze, check the posting date.... moonshyne was getting his grave digger on...

as for moonshyne's question that didn't really have much to do with the original thread, yes they'd most likely give you a discount. It cannot hurt to ask anyway.

as for the thread's purpose, kartboy exhaust hangers work wonders for that issue
