Volkswagen probes reports of airbag problems
Reuters / December 23, 2004
FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen is checking reports of possible problems in three U.S. models after officials came up with 107 cases where side airbags may have deployed improperly, the carmaker said on Thursday.
A spokesman for Europe's biggest automaker said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had asked it last week about the reports.
"We are investigating the cases and are in contact with the authorities about the inquiry," a spokesman said, adding that it was unaware of any injuries from the incidents and that it had not recalled any vehicles.
The investigation concerns up to 447,000 cars made between 2001 and 2003 including the Golf, GTI and Jetta models.
