test drove a 2000 BMW M5 last night

I test drove a 2000 BMW M5 last night. I have always thought they were so awesome. Private party $36,000...handed me the keys for a test drive by myself.

400 hp V8, 6 speed, 285's on the rear, 3800 pounds. 13.4 1/4 mile @ 107mph.

My damm POS 15 year old talon makes the M5 feel slow....

It shouldnt feel that way but it does. My 20g makes so much friggen low end torque compared to a NA car.

I keep wondering...did I not rev it high enough. Was the owner running 87 octane? Am I just expecting too much from a $75,000 production car? If the M5 feels like this the M3 must feel really slow? Maybe I sould go back for another test drive.

By the way, I didnt show up for the test drive in the talon...

The M5 is a different kind of car though, you can't compare it to a Talon or even an Evo.

Thats very true. I really like that bodystyle M5. Especially after I borrowed my cousin's M5 for a couple of days.

I don't know about the one you test drove but this thing was fully loaded + individual options. Launching from a stop @ 2.5k rpm produced nice controlled burnouts, but it doesn't suddenly hook up like an AWD dsm. Its just such a nice cruiser and its so cool to see that manual shifter in a luxury car.

Don't forget that the car is quite heavy and that sensation of speed is not as raw as dsm with a blaring exhuast and chirping BOV.

So, are you thinking of buying one?

Granted the S4 is great and all, but my friend has one, and people assume its just a A4. Seriously I get more looks than he does. Strange, but people just dont know an S4 when they see one. Evo +$25K=S4. I'm gonna stick with the EVO.

s4...blah! i just helpd a friend trade in his and he bought TWO evos (GSR for street/daily use and an RS for track). All it ended up costing him was an extra 2k for TWO evos over his s4 (mildly modded). He is very happy with his decision.
On the m5 topic, a friend of mine has a 2000 red m5, and i agree it doesnt have enough low end "oomph". It has some *****, dont get me wrong, but its MUCh more on the luxury side than the performance. jsut wait till the new m5 comes out, that will be the ULTIMATE performance/lux

Man can you imagine that. 5,000 Ladies.... wow that would be:

5,000 A$$es
10,000 Nipleeeesssss

should I go on? mmmmm

If you have that many ladies, I don't think you will care what car you had....

Yes I am looking to replace the talon with something that will really knock my socks off performance wise. I just figured the M5 would be blowing the tires off the rims. To make matters worse the roads were wet. And yes as Tiff would say 'I had sport mode on and traction control off'. I am sure that with a little clutch work the tires would get spinning pretty good on dry/wet pavement. Its just not gonna break the tires loose on dry pavement by mashing the throttle in second or third gear. The transmission on the M5 seems to be geared REALLY tall compared to an EVO which is about the oppsite end of the spectrum. I would like to try an M5 with a lowered final drive ratio. Yeah I know an EVO and a M5 are completely different cars...but they are both sports minded cars. If anyone has any other car suggestions out there, let me hear it. I dont care if its an import or domestic. Really looking for RWD or AWD but I am not closed minded. Hopefully something 2000 or newer. What else is there to consider besides a C5-Z06 and an EVO?
