the best AWD system
The race Audi AWD are awesome, their street version is so-so.
The Evo's AWD are really FWD with RWD added in, so it's a compromise from the beginning.
Subaru's AWD was designed from the start to be AWD, so there is advantage.
Skyline GT-R...this would be my top pick if we could actually get it.

2002 Audi A6

2005 STi
2005 Hemi Magnum
2006 A4 2.0 turbo
2006 Evo
The ABSOLUTE best AWD is Subaru. The Audi is probably next, and the Evo right behind. The Magnum was probably the worst. It is the same as the Mercedes 4-matic system, and I didn't care for it. Of course, that was right after I had the STi, so that was tough to live up to!!
i don't know where you people get your information.
how is audi's the best? and how is it NOT like a fwd and rear wheel drive paired together?
i mean you do you guys think some sort of magic is happening in these systems? an awd system can only be one of a few things. it's either passive which is some sort and combination of 3 differentials (viscous, helical, or clutch type) or it's electrically controlled in which case it's some combination of passives and actives (electro pnumatic clutch types or planetary types).
the power can only be distributed in so many ways.... to the rear and to the sides....
where the hell do you guys get that the skyline's system is so great? top gear and hot version international? do some of your own thinking please...
how is subaru's the best? especially when you say that in relation to mitsubishi's and they're SO similar (gee an electropnumatic clutch type in the midde... a passive type in the rear and a helical in the front, for japan they're ALSO similar).
many of the awd systems are only differing in the logic that the ecu uses to send power. the ONLY bad awd systems are those found in early model porsches and mercedes where they use the brakes to control open differentials to get them to do what they want.
i don't understand how some people spout stuff.

"Best" has to have some context. For what, bad weather, track, all round?
Audi, really was the first to make a successful AWD. There are also a few types of AWD systems. There was a web page that had all the systems, but I can't find it. There is the torsion type, open type, viscus coupler, electronic, etc...
Audi's new AWD has a 40/60 F/R split now.
Here is some good reading....

i really recommend downloading the episode of TopGear (BBC automotive show...Jeremy Clarkson) where they directly compare the S4 vs. STi vs. Evo8...
results...evo8 voted #1 and the S4 AWD system was described as "no match for the japanese"...
wish a had the link...just google for it pls.

I think Audi, Mitsubishi, and Subaru all have decent AWD systems.

JDM Evo's AYC is nice but more friendly in road racing situation rather than off-road rally situation.

Suby is viscous coupling meaning fluid controls the center diff
Audi is torsion based meaning it's like a quaife LSD

great thread, sorry to change the subject but...
how big of a difference would you notice btw the VCU Evo and ACD evo on dry tarmac, if VCU evo also happens to use the same front LSD? Are we talking about milliseconds of response?

look up the prodrive p2 and you will get the best AWD system ever on any car. All of you that watch top gear should have know this already. its suck how they won't make it though the system in the prodrive p2 is called ATD (active torque dynamics)
