haha, you forgot about the d15!! 1.5L non vtec. yup, i had one, it sucked, dont get me wrong i loved my honda but i could run faster on foot! lol hondas dont have torque, what are you talking about?
well my buddy has a JDM integra type R and its got almost every upgrage i can think of except forced induction and that car is fast we ran at great lakes speed way and it ran mid 13s with crappy tires that were not hooking. IMO the looks good and handles great and it had a insane amount of torque (and its fun to drive it on the right side) but i would take a evo over that any day.
Why is the Integra type R so great? Well, I had one for a long time. [JDM DC5 Type R]
-They are beautiful to look at
-200bhp from a 2.0L engine ain't bad
-Revs. Till about 9000rpm stock
-Nice gearbox
-2600lbs (curb weight)
-Amazing handling
-Great brakes
All in all, a wonderful car. I got the evo while I had it, but sold it about a year after my evo arrived. The reason the evo has the edge is mainly because the ITR is very nearly at the limit of its capabilities. To get any more power from that engine without forced induction takes a lot of work for a relatively little gain and most of the time it's a trade-off. A full Spoon system from the engine to rear bumper, for example will get you hp, but at a very noticable expense of low end torque for example.
Anyway, while the ability to rev all the way into tomorrow is great fun, but it does get stressful driving long distances...
This isn't half of it but should get you going...

There's also a historical context that you have to keep in mind. At the time, a car like this was considered ahead of its time so it retains a cult following. Even if its performance attributes pale in comparison to contempory cars. Look at the old Sentra SE-Rs and GTI's. They perform nowhere near cars like the STI, SRT-4 or EVO, yet there's alot of people out there who remember that these were once considered sporty cars so they still have a following.

But dont people swap engines anyways? Yes the ITR and CTR are both not available in the US (right?) but why do people attempt to race integras when the honda is a better platform (becasue it is lighter) I am just making guesses.
I would rather have a fully modified civic, making it close to type r specs as opposed to an integra fully modified to type r specs.
Or am I missing something here like it is not possible to modify a lancer to an evo because, aside from the drivetrain, the body alone has a lot more welds???
CTR was never available in the US, only the watered down Si versions and the ITR was available from 97-01 as a limited edition coupe.

I think Kordwood hit the nail on the head. Nothing in its time could keep up for low cost on an Auto-X course. The turbo eclipses could win in a drag race, but they would get destroyed on a tight course. There were no SRT4's, Evo's, WRX's, STi's, SE-R Spec V's, Ralliarts, Mazda-Speeds etc. back in the 90's. If you wanted 200hp, it was either a type R, a turbo eclipse, or a turbo VW. Out of those three cars, the Type R was easily the best "race car". Another reason why they are so popular is because they are Honda's, which means they are still running reliably on the road whereas alot of the Eclipse's and Vdubs have gone by the wayside losing value.
