Thumbs up Sti tranny designed by Porche

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=371676

Hey guys,

Well, my brother Ryan, one of the Master Subaru Tech's at Rancho Grande Motors in San Luis Obispo, CA just came back from his usual "New Model Update and Information" 2 day training course for the Forester Turbo and the STi. Anyways, here are just a few cool facts that the regional Subaru instructor informed him about the STi:

1. The STi's transmission was DESIGNED(not mass produced) by Porsche for Subaru.

2. The second gear has 3 synchro's and is essentially "beefed up" along with the rest of transmission to handle the power of the 2.5 turbo..translation...easier to "light 'em up" from a dead stop.

3. The STi clutch has 900lb pounds more holding force than that of a regular WRX...meaning mild mods won't phase the clutch.

Let me repeat once again, these are STRAIGHT from the Subaru Tech Training Center in Ontario, CA.

Evo won overall in every test ive seen. Just cuz the STi has a porshe designed transmission doesnt make it superior. Evo won overall. Don't get me wrong...If i could have both I'd definately love to have them but that doesnt impress me. It can be designed by porshe... but it doesnt mean its good quality. Subaru is known for their ****ty tranny's

That's good to know Porsche had a hand in the Suby's tranny. That was one thing I was a bit worried about when I first read in Car and Driver that the STi would have a "Subaru developed" 6-speed. I thought they should maybe pick one of the tried and true tranny's off the shelf and stick to engineering the rest of the car. Good to know they are doing it in house (with some help) and hopefully doing it right.

First the EVO hasn't won every test.

Second it's Porsche (he spelled it right 3 inches above your post! How smart do you have to be?)

Third who knows if it's superior but it's nice to know they took the time and effort to custom build it for the car from scratch. Rather then just look around for a tranny in the product line.

Who cares if you're impressed, did we ask? Porsche has a good design department they were chosen by Harley Davidson when it was time to build the V Rod engine from scratch. Others are impressed by their designs and engineers.

Whether or not the Subie trannys sucked in the past (or the old Harley engines sucked) doesn't matter when you start over from scratch

True true...I have this 6MT in my WRX!...Also, It has been proclaimed by many as being the strongest AWD production gearbox ever built.

It is kind of like a Muncy rock crucher tranny...you can just feel the beefy gears when you shift...I love this thing!

Dude seriously, he didn't say anything about the EVO, he didn't say the STi was superior to anything. Where in the HELL did your post come from? Are you that worried about whether everybody thinks the EVO is better than the STi or not?

BTW, the only people who have problems with Subaru trannies are people who don't know how to drive an AWD car. There are WRX's running around with more than double stock hp doing just fine on the stock transmission.

Yea i have noticed to that people who drive the WRX fine, and don't do stupid things! The tranny holds up fine, but then again, I am no Subaru expert!! Newais, I was kinda shocked when i read this the first time on Nasioc, i didn't want to belive it..lol! But i give them alota props for this hopefully it will do them really good!! lol. but i guess that's why people have been commenting on how nice the tranny is...cuz on nasioc ppl who have owned WRX's say how much better the Tranny feels!!!!

FYI- getrag worked on the tranny not Porsche, but getrag does build all of Porsche's transmissions. So it is kinda right. Getrag also built the transmission for the SVT Focus, and on another side note V.A.G. (Volkswagon Audi Group) who owns Porsche also owns a 19% share of Subaru and they have tweaked models for Subaru before.

Correction: Porsche is the largest independent auto manufacturer around. They have collaborated with VAG on many occasions (Cayenne, Porsche 924/944/968/914) but VAG does not have controlling interest in Porsche. Back in the 80's, Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen had a unified presence in the United States, and were marketed together, which is probably the source of all the confusion.
