Can't afford an evo.

Yes, thats right im an 18 year old student and i just flat out cant afford the evo right now. At this point its looking like i should be able to have one within the next two years, but i need a car that i can take to the tracks in the meantime.

Being that my goal in the long run is to be driving an evo, i've been trying to think of a car that will help me make the transition to the evo easier. Right now funding is severely limited. i need a car that i can run for a few thousand dollars, it doesn't have to be pretty, comfortable, luxurious, or have a nice sound system or even ac for that matter. i dont need to be making a ton of horse power, i just need a car that i can race, and really get the hang of performance driving in the interim before i get an evo.

I have been thinking that the best bet at this point would be to get a 1st gen mitsubishi eclipse gsx or eagle talon tsi awd. these cars use the same 4g63 block that is used in the evo, and in addition are awd just like the evo. What does everyone think about using this car in the meantime while waiting to get my evo? Are there any others i should consider?

PS: i do realize that this car would in no way compare to an evo, and im not looking for a cheaper alternative, just a nice way to make the transition.

Get a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4......2.0 turbo and all wheel drive. Also it is a 4-door so it would be just like a EVO. By the way it is the same engine and drivetrain as the Eclipse GSX. Also a total sleeper.

If you can get your hands on a GVR-4, ****** it up. IMHO, much cooler than any USDM-Evo.

GVR-4's= baller status.

If you can't find one of those, get your hands on a GC Subaru Impreza w/ a 5-spd. Impreza 2.5RS, if you can find one for a good price... but the Impreza L is just as good.

wrx, sr20 powered 240, fd rx7, m3, 300zx, even a eg hatch with the right swap and suspension can be a blast to learn on and be competitive with the evo. there are alot of options out there

Keep your eyes open for a descent used one while you wait your two years, I picked up my '03 for $25,500 out the door with less than 2,000 mi on it, I could not afford a new one either. I kept it for two years and I just rescently sold it for a new '07 Legacy GT, I got $19,500 for the evo trade in.

Thanks everyone for the input, as far as the galant vr4 goes i couldn't agree more. If i could find a vr4 it would be absolutely awesome, however these days that seems to be a pretty big "if". I hadn't thought of the vr4 yet, what an idiot! lol definitely adding that into the list of cars to search for.

Keep the input comin guys, i really appreciate it!
