EVO vs. s2000... RELIABILITY!
abuse is abuse, it doesnt matter if its a tank, eventually it will break down. I believe the evo would be relatively more reliable due to it being in production longer and most kinks have been tweeked. I believe if you toke an evo and a S2000 around the same track doing the same driving, I believe the s2000 would break first. Whether it be a busted tire or a snapped axle. Just my opinions on it.
I just want to say when you say most kinks have been tweaked... do you mean how evo have had weak transfer cases and transmission since Evo I.....
If they just FIXED the tranny they wouldn't have to do with warranty problems... They would have a much better reputation...
Cheers!
I helped my brother Turbo his S2000 2 years ago. It ran like a champ. Several track days, 1 trip to the drag strip, never had a problem (stock clutch, tranny, and drive train). I would say it was honda accord reliable for us. Can't say for other S2000 owners. We did talk to other S2000 owners who had clutch issues (similar to the evo's clutch issue if you launch it too hard). I would say it's a toss up but if I had to choose, I would go for the Honda in reliability.
Damn it is so hard to say which is more reliable I have had 2 evos and have not had one problem w/ either and I had one of the first VIII's in the country and it was lightly modded but my IX is much more modded and nothing either. Have had an accord and it gave me hell w/ trani problems the only mod it had was an aem cai, but my 99 si was lightly modded and never gave me a problem, tough call.
It's all on how you drive and what you have done. I own a 400+ hp S2000 and my wife has a 320 + hp Evo 8...
In my Honda's lifetime it has broken 2 halfshafts 1 Diff and 1 Tranny....Now this is when I use to drag it and only had 330 hp in it......Now I have 400+ and it runs great....no more launchs though and I've gone 2 years without a problem.
On the Evo side I just picked it up in Dec and the Transfer case is already going bad...or it was going with the proir owner (most likely). Time will tell with this car also.
Like I've said if you drive it hard...your wallet will be hit hard.

all the cars i've had have been reliable. 1978 cadillac coupe deville 150,000+ miles. blew the front trans seal from tranny being overfull. (whoops). donated. 1982 mazda rx-7 gsl. 225,000 miles on the original motor. leaky oil cooler and burnt vacuum hose in the back. sold. 1988 toyota supra. 215,000 miles. valve cover leaked into #6 cyl., blew a power steering hose, various other minor problems. sat for 3 years, fired up on the first try. donated. 1992 toyota 4 runner. maintenance, and a sticking #2 valve causing a misfire and ses light. 175,000 miles. sold a month ago for $2500 dollars. 1993 300 zx twin turbo. 153,000 miles. replaced engine wiring harness, various sensors, lightly modded. totalled by flood. ANY car can be reliable. and ANY car can be a lemon. hondas do have a good track record. my evo is bone stock and NEVER gave me a problem. (as far as powertrain and things like no starts or ses lights.) ultra reliable so far!
I think I have the most knowledge of reliability for both cars:
I have owned 2 s2000s, one with 130,000 miles on it (got stolen) and now the current one with 75,000 miles.
My evo has 107,000 miles. I redline both cars occasionally, participate in racing here and there. One thing I rarely do is launch. I made sure my cars are always maintained, change fluid every 3000 miles etc, transfer case every 15k etc.
You can drive it like you stole it, just dont launch and you will be good. I have been sideways in my s2k alot, four wheel squeel with the evo. Just dont launch and you will be good. Did I mention, dont launch the car?

Our family owned an AP1 S2000 for about 3 years w/ 50K miles when we sold it. Still had original clutch. Bought just gas, oil and tires. Our old Honda Civic went through a tranny and a clutch in about 2 years. It had higher maintance/repair costs than the S2000! I feel that S2000 was a great little car (NOT good for roadtrips), but my buddy here bought one (An AP1 as well) used and had two piston rings go out within about 10k miles from when he bought it. Got rid of it and drives a Nissan 240sx now. I drove the Honda once, and did really like the feeling of "putting your car on."
He's getting another one as soon as he can afford it.
Have another friend here with a S/Ced one with ZERO problems. I forgot how long he has had it, but it definitely takes a daily beating and keeps on going.
