EVO vs. s2000... RELIABILITY!
I have a friend who just said to me "it's still a Honda and it's still 20 times more reliable than an EVO" when I explained to him that the s2000 was STILL a sports car and not an "Accord kind of reliable". I explained to him that if you abuse the car, it will cost you... parts are not CHEAP, and just because it is a Honda doesn't mean it is bullet proof.
Considering the abuse delivered to the common EVO, if it where applied to an s2000 would it be just as reliable? Or would the s2000 indeed be a costly car to keep up with? I say that they are along the same lines, and that there are more "problemless, regular maintinence up to 90,000 miles" s2000s because a lot of people don't beat the SNOT out of them like they do EVO's...
The problems that EVO's face under abuse:
Transfer Case repair or replace
4th and 5th Gear grinds
Expensive clutch jobs ($1,500 or so)
and then you have the 4G63 which has been built for 20+ years now? And is considered to be one of the best motors ever built...
I am not 100% formilliar with what goes wrong with the s2000 but I have heard of (correct me if I am wrong)...
Rear differential repair or replace
Gear grinds
Expensive clutch jobs ($1,300 oem dealer quoted)
I am NOT saying one is better than the other! I am simply trying to get acrossed to him that EITHER car will cost you if you abuse it and JUST because it is a Honda... does not mean it is invincible and under the SAME owner abuse they will both hurt the wallet. He seems to feel that these cars are Honda Accord reliable. I beg to differ. Though I am not saying the EVO is a Camry.
What do you guys think.

I almost bought a leftover S2k for $33,000 OTD (Liberty Honda in Hartford, CT).
I love the car. its just for a different type of person than myself (mainly smaller.. haha)
From my honda experience, my good friend with a supercharged S2K had no reliability problems over 2 years that he owned it at all.
He couldn't launch in VTEC w/ the SC (his quote, not speaking from experience here) due to rearend damage, but he didn't need to replace a thing.
Overall though, I've owned many cars.. the Evo has cost me just as much as my modded LS1 to repair.

As far as my evo, went through 3 motors... Done with that. Graned, the Evo made a hell of a lot more power, but if youre talking straight reliablity, you cannot beat the the Honda....
I personally think both cars are about the same in reliability (its just easier to add hp to the evo which can lead to owner abusing evos and that leads to a greater possibility of things potentially breaking if launches are not correct)
I got my clutch job with fluids for about $550 at my local speed shop, and so far the evo has been very reliable.

Umm, lets see... my s2k never broke once on me even after repeated abuse. Hell I ever jumped the car a good 2-3 feet in the air and it was fine.
The evo was babied since I bought it and I eventually replaced every single part in the engine/drivetrain and the stock tranny was ****.
So lets recap...
s2k was abused to no end and worked perfect.
the evo was babied and broke more parts than anything I ever owned.
even my heavily modified talon was 100 times more reliable than my evo and just as fast as my stroker evo...
granted my s2k was not modified much but it was abused 100 times more than any car I ever owned.

this is not even a fair comparison.
the s2k is way more reliable than the evo and the build quality and overall quality is much better than an evo.
but i still pick the evo. its awd and is much fast with a few mods.

I owned an s2000 and put over 47000 miles on it. I never had a single problem with it. It was extremely reliable to me. But, I took care of it too.
I think any car can have problems and can become unreliable for whatever reason. Therefore I don't think you can say the which is more reliable when it comes to the evo vs the s2k.

I will go out on the limb and say the S2K will be more reliable than the Evo. It's designed to take abuse. Redlining @ 9 Krpm, you can't even say that with a Ferrari. The rear end problems are mainly for the force induction cars. If you leave the S2K in the NA form (even if it built) it should be very reliable.
As far as reliable go, you should see my brother's Toyota 4runner. 155K plus miles and still on the original oil from the factory. He replaced the tires, couples belts, and top off the fluids when needed. Still running strong. Toyota engines are Forking rediculous when it's come to reliability.

abuse is abuse, it doesnt matter if its a tank, eventually it will break down. I believe the evo would be relatively more reliable due to it being in production longer and most kinks have been tweeked. I believe if you toke an evo and a S2000 around the same track doing the same driving, I believe the s2000 would break first. Whether it be a busted tire or a snapped axle. Just my opinions on it.
