Car and Driver reviews the GT-R.

Just got my issue of C&D in the mail and was very suprised at the test results for the Nissan GT-R.

Since I can't scan and post the pics as per forum rules........

Some #'s I found interesting:

0-60 mph: 3.3 seconds
0-100 mph: 7.8 seconds
1/4 mile: 11.5 @ 124 mph
Skidpad (185-ft dia.): 0.99g
Braking (70-0 mph): 145 ft
MPG: 17mpg City & 21mpg Highway
Curb weight: 3908 lbs
CD: 0.27
Stock boost: 10.7 psi

Price: $70.835 (Good luck on that one)

Very impressive; especially the trap speed considering the weight.

I don't think we'll see too much variation in acceleration times since the transmission lends itself to less human error, so I think these #'s will be the norm.

IMO if you can get one at the stated price it's direct competiton is the C6 Z06 but considering the GT-R dealer markups, the Z06 is a better bargain.

I think that they corrected that 11:5 @ 124mph! I read on the GT-R form that it was an 11:7 @ 120mph so I'm a little confused.

Hey I hope it is true! I will be

I have a MSRP deal GT-R Premiun package so it will be within 2k of the price of my 07 Z06 which at the time I bought it I had to pay MSRP for. 74k.

Here is my GT-R deal so you can compare.

QX1 Ivory Pearl / G Black

1. 65319 Premium $71,900.00

2. Destination (T.BA.) ?????????

3. Cold Weather Package $0.00

4. IPod Converter $360.00

5. Carpeted Floor Mats $280.00

6. Total MSRP Less Destination $72,540.00

Now there are guys getting 8500.00 off MSRP on 08 Z06's so you can get one with almost all options at about $68-69k plus tax

So they are close as is but there aren't many GT-R's that you will find at MSRP. I have 2 other people I know on the GT-R site that I have talked to that both paid 10k over MSRP and they feel they got a good deal! I have seen a dealer out west that is asking 124k for the one and only GT-R they are getting...it is just like when the Z06 came out in 06 the dealers were getting way over sticker for them.

^^^+1 what you said. The GTR is awesome, it is nice, it handles like no other,it is sophisticated and blah blah blah, now try to go to a dealer and get one and tell us the history.

It is ironic, many people had the means to buy one but you can't even get one for any reasonable price. We can talk about this car all day long, yes I do know it handles very good and that it is a great car but the reality is that you can not get them. Some lucky people (just a few ) got them at MSRP, now is not even possible.

What good is this car if the price is no longer competitive? How good is this car if you can not get one even if you have the money? I am not trying to discredit this car. This car is perhaps the best car around for that price (if you can get one) but people must realize that as we speak this car is out of the equation as far is performance/price.

whtevo05,

Have you noticed that the difference bewteen the base GTR and the higher trim has almost identical trim package as the 2LZ Z06? mainly (bose stereo, heated seats, side airbags) but the Z06 offers a few more stuff

This is exactly what whtevo05 and myself were refering to:

brand spanking new 2008 Z06 for $63,445. Do you see what I mean? The GTR can not compite against the Z06 as we speak, the price difference makes the GTR in a different league, as simple as that.

The $63,445 is the price of a 08 Z06 that you can order right at this moment, the GTR you CAN NOT get. Period!!! With the dealer bellow, you don't have to bargain the price, he offers the car(Z06) at invoice.

This is something that heavily plays in favor of the Z06, the GTR not only cost much more but also can't get, the Z06 cost much less and you can order any color, anytime..how does that sound?!!

edmunds tested a private owner's car in japan and it ran an uncorrected 11.5 quarter, so that sounds about right. the 11.7 is the factory figure which, like the other factory figures, is conservative.

Yeah and it was also brought up by some people(including me) that the model tested was a Japanese version(better gas, lower emission standards= more HP and ultimately the GTR tested wasn't US spec crash test standards which involves reinforcements in bumpers and doors=more weight). For that matter it could even have the gear ratios changed like they did on the US specs WRX for gas mileage purposes..

On the test they also comment that launching the car with the launch control was taking a lot of abuse on the drivetrain and that after only two passes/launches they were concern of reliability(watch the video again).

Having had a bunch of AWD cars and a bunch of turbo cars I think this car could get significantly faster with some mods but I am inclined to say that out of the box this car wouldn't do better than what we have seen.

Just my .2c

Your right on Carlo with the packages being almost identical. I think they both offer a few other things that the other doesn't that seperates them from one another. Like I said I hope the US spec GT-R can hit all these claimed numbers. It would be great since I'm getting one but I'm also not buying into all the Rag hype just yet.

What I do think the GT-R will be is a hellva good DD that will give some high $$ sports and GT cars some nightmares just like the Z06 still does.

What I don't think it will do is be a great long track lot of laps race car like the NA
Z06 is.

FI will create heat soak and that will be it's weak spot. Maybe a good "Time Attack" car with some weight loss.

I'm still impressed with some of the numbers the GT-R is putting up even if they prove to be a little inflated. This car seems to be defying the laws of HP vs weight in every test shown so if it is for real then It will have a lot of other manufactures going back to the drawing board for sure.

Besides the main atraction that enthusiast look for(handling, dynos, acceleration, etc) I personally look at other also important factors to consider when buying such cars. One of the things I look a lot is the fuel consumption and another thing is the insurance.

I would love to see how much would cost to insure a GTR, I do know that my Evo was $90 and some change a month full coverage but the Z06 for me is just cheap as hell to insure $71 full coverage a month.

As I mentioned in my first paragraph, many people just focus soo much in other performance factors that they leave behind important things such gas mielage, insurance or plain jane maintenance/warranty. Being the Corvette an american icon it plays favorably when is time to get replacement parts(autozone, pepboys,NAPA,etc).

Edmunds Insideline has been averaging just over 17mpg in their road trip with the GTR. That's including quite a bit of spirited driving.

As for heat soak and forced induction cars, it's really a non-issue on properly designed cars. All the old IMSA GTP cars were turbo. The Audi R8 and R10 are both turbo; the R8 absolutely dominted American Lemans for years. Heck, I think it won Sebring 7 years in a row.

I'm really surprised at the trap speed C&D got. That's really high... the highest I've seen reported. The previous high I've seen was 120mph. Insideline got 118mph when they took it to the dragstrip in Sacramento. R&T got 116mph. I'd guess that 118-120mph is more representative.
