I was thinking of getting a commuter since gas is 4bucks a gallon. Damn If I knew I wouldn't get yelled at and made fun of for riding a moped that gets 140mpg I would get one.

I've also been thinking about picking up a base model Prius. Great car as a DD.

Seriously, maybe a girlfriend or something I wouldn't mind being the passenger.

My Grandma approves of this thread.

I worked at Toyota for 2 years and they are great cars! I love them and would even consider an old one (ugly model) for a DD. They aren't that agile, but they aren't meant for performance. They are made for good gas mileage. To be honest I have to agree with the guy saying to get a motorcycle. You can't drive it all season long, but it'd save me a bunch of money during the summer and most of the fall and spring.

Since they cost so much, it will take a while to get your money's worth.

In reality, a 600cc sport bike will only average around 40 mpg and that's on the highway. High engine speeds and large wind resistance diminish MPG's.

The tires on your new sportbike will only last around 6000 miles even if you ride it easy. They're performance oriented and cost about 275 a set.

Plan to do your own fluid changes as the costs are more than any car. Valve adjustments would be a requirement every 6000 to 8000 miles. Most people do not have the special tools, knowledge and capabilities to perform this function.

Insurance? You would probably be amazed at the cost.

I'm not raining on your parade but I love it when people start talking about gas mileage, saving money, and then throw in the "motorcycle" word.

You can save possibly save money but then you are talking about a scooter or some less than 250cc bike.

They did that concept a while ago. The one with the really ugly wheels.

Anyway, I hate the damn prius. Oddly enough though I want to drive one just to see if I can actually appreciate it. I think we're going to rent one for vacation this year.

I'm still waiting to see someone drop a supercharged small block in one monster garage style. Side pipes spewing uncatalyzed exhaust and fire ***** on a prius= awesome

I'd try to get a used one if possible with the carpool exempt sticker (at least thats what we have in CA, idk about other states/countries). The new ones don't have that anymore.

This is so funny. For about a year now my friend has been trying to sell me on the idea of a prius and i kept laughing at him. I told him the only prius id drive was one with a ls1 swap, flowmasters, and no cats. I honestly hated that car. I've spent a week in the thing now, and can honestly say I take all that back. This car is simply awesome. Not inspiring to drive, but hey bring out the evo when you really wanna go fast.

As for savings, I guess before it wasn't all that practical from ONLY a cost standpoint, but with gas over $4 a gallon and project to get higher, this thing can save you some serious cash. Tax credits/deductions aside (energy bill isn't out yet), in city driving this will get over 3x better gas mileage than the X. Assuming you spend about 20k mi in your car a year, you can save a nice $4000 for every year you own the Prius. I personally like the idea of a car that pays for itself in 5 years. And if gas prices get higher (which they probably will) that will only equate to more and more savings.
