1997 GSX questions
OK I did some searching for this and really didn't feel like my questions were answered. I appreciate any help here please thanks. Oh and if you don't have anything nice to say, please save it for off the forums. In other words email me.
Ok I have found the perfect GSX for me to buy. I have been searching high and low and finally found one.
Red, Man. Tranny, good condition, and cheap.
Before I buy I would like to get some ideas from people who know more about this car than I do.
Ok it has had its motor changed once with a stock motor. The new motor has 90k on it. My questions for the motor is this:
What problems can I expect from the 97 GSX motor?
What power can I get out of it before I need to change the internals?
What size turbo is in it now?
What HP can the IC withstand?
What HP can the Turbo withstand?
My questions for the Drivetrain:
What TQ can the tranny, clutch, and crank withstand?
Cams?
My questions for the chassis components?
What TQ can the axles hold?
What HP/TQ/Speed can the suspension hold?
Any other info you guys can think of that I would need to know about this DSM please feel free to share. I am stupid when it comes to GSX's.

Your best resource for DSM questions would be DSMtuners.com, you'll be able to find answers to all your questions there for sure.
To answer a few of your questions off the top of my head:
-The 93-99 DSM's had 7 bolt crankshafts which are notorious for thrust bearing failure (aka crankwalk) especially when using a heavy duty clutch. I would check and see it they had a 6 bolt installed when they had the engine replaced. They came in the 90-92 models and are the swap of choice, not known for the same bearing failure.
-I belive the safe max power most will suggest on stock internals is around 400 whp.
-Stock turbo is a T25 and is absolutley worthless, for a quick fairly cheap upgrade, go with an Evo3 16G along with the Evo3 manifold and 02 housing.
-Stock intercooler will get you to 400 hp but will heatsoak very quickly and is quite restrictive, a frontmount is not required but definetly a plus.
-If I remember correctly, the T25 will get you to around 300 hp but that's pushing it.
-The stock blowoff valve should be at the top of your list of things to replace as well. The stock one is plastic and leaks, a 1G blowoff valve is a nice upgrade, all metal, and will hold more boost without leaking.
I can't answer any of your drivetrain questions, but I'm sure DSMtuners could

^^Negative on the max power on stock internal. I am making around 500hp(crank) on stock 7 bolt. Archy from IAperformance made 513whp (No NOS)on a mustang dyno to all 4 wheel in a bone stock internal 4G63 with 200000 miles and there are many many more people with 500-600hp (stock internals).
Speedjunky,
The stock turbo flow efectively 250-265cfm(less than half of a regular Evo 8). The only real issue is the crankwalk on the 7 bolt engine but it happens to some people not all(did not happen to me and I have 95000 mile and pushing 500hp(crank)

The key word in what I said was "SAFE" max power. I don't think he is looking for the stock block record. Once you get over 400 whp on a stock block you have to keep a close eye on everything that's going on or else kaboom!
Based on the type of questions he's asking, I don't think he should push it near the absolute limits until he is more familiar with the car.

"Safe" is everyone's opinion. I too, had 375 awhp with my stock 7 bolt with 160K on it... to me that's plenty safe still.
Bolt ons is also your opinion.. turbos exhausts, fuel, computers.. that's plenty to bolt on, and you can certainly push the HP limits before you have to even worry about rods, pistons etc.
Have fun! I still have days when I miss my 2g and it's power
