Any EVO guys gone B6 S4 or vice versa?
Curious to see if any EVO guys went to an B6 S4 or are thinking/thought of it. How do you feel they compare to each other in terms of reliability/maintenance. I've heard some scary things about B6 S4's as I have with EVO's but the EVO seems to be much cheaper when the big things go wrong. I am talking about the V8 S4 btw.
A friend of mine has one. To the best of my knowledge, he hasn't had any major problems in well over a year of owning it. Unless you count fuel economy. I think he gets around 14 mpg.
That said, they're beautiful cars. No one builds an interior like Audi IMO. My Evo seriously feels like a tin can compared to his car.

Had a brand-new B6 6-speed S4 before the Evo. By far a much 'nicer' car, but the car was always in the shop.
And I'm not very hard on cars, BTW. Fuel pump, wiper issues, alternator (which is a $1000 job out of warranty, BTW), coil pack problems, etc, etc. Was on a flatbed 2 or 3 times. Needless to say I sold the POS.
The Evo, on the other hand, has been very reliable. And you can't beat the 5yr, 60K bumper-to-bumper warranty, or the 10yr, 100k powertrain warranty.
Let's just say I'd be very nervous owning any Audi past the warranty period.
BTW, your buddy must drive the wee out of his S4-- With some 'spirited' driving, I don't think I ever got less than 18 or 19mpg.

Stock turbo comparison with full bolt ons, the Evo is stronger on the dyno in power, but not torque. The Evo is also lighter, handles and brakes better. I would way rather have an Evo than a B6 S4.
There's no question the S4 is a nicer car..........It's better in pretty much every subjective category. But the Evo is a true driver's car.
In stock form, it would be a pretty good race between the two cars. Like I said, I've owned both. But an Evo with a flash and an exhaust will lay waste to a V8 S4.
The S4 does have alot better low-rpm 'grunt', as I sometimes get annoyed with the low-rpm, off-boost lack of power in the Evo. But I forget about all that when I give her some more revs.
Don't forget that the S4 weighs almost 600 pounds more than the Evo.
But I'm not the only Audi owner with some reliability problems. If you're looking at a used one, try to find one at a dealer with the 10yr, 100K certified warranty.
One last note.....The S4 (on snow tires) was the most stable car I've ever driven in the snow. I put the same tires on my Evo (with different wheels), and I was a little disappointed in the Evo's snow performance in comparison. I think this is where the extra 600lbs on the same footprint is going to help.

Ha!
I came from a B7 S4 . That was an absolutely beautiful car, and a fat a$$ pig all rolled into one (nearly 4000 lbs). The 4.2 L V8 is a great engine, but very limited on performance mods, if you want more performance. Basically, all you can do to it is an exhaust, CAI, and APR or GIAC reflash. Major gains can be had with an aftermarket (MTM) supercharger ($15,000 though). Fit and finish is second to none, however!!!!!
As far as performance goes, a stock Evo IX will have its way all day and night with the S4. Somedays I miss that car, but all I have to do is think of how much I was paying on it (>$1500/month when you factor in gas and insurance).
I traded it in , and now have a IX BR 350 (plus lol!!) and an Audi A3 for the wife!!
I'm still paying less for 2 cars than I was for the S4. Basically, I started to track my cars and immediately realized that the S4 was very limited with power gains and weight. Now, I have the best of both worlds; A car for the track and a nice daily driver.
BTW, No car has ever put more of a smile on my face than my BR 350!! Buschur racing has out done themselves. If you want a full Mitsubishi warranty (like that's really worth anything lol), then BR 350 is the way to go!!!
The mod bug has bitten me though, and I am no longer a stock BR 350. However, If you want a very high performance car that retains warranty, no better choice than the BR 350. Totally different class of peformance from a stock IX MR.
