My 1963 Volkswagen Dune Buggy!

Hey everyone,
I just finished a big Father & Son project at the beginning of this month.
I picked it up May 11th and it was in pretty rough shape (original pictures at the bottom)
My father and I did pretty much all of the work in our driveway whenever we could. We basically striped her down to bare bones and started fresh. The hardest part was defiantly the body work. We had to do a lot of fiberglass work (filling holes, repairing cracks, re-shaping / re-molding the rear, and prepping the body for paint). Another big headache was completely rewiring the car! (in case you were wondering, the only things we didn’t do at home was the roll bar and the metallic paint job) But yea… we put countless hours into this restoration and basically everything on the buggy is new or replaced…except for the engine and transmission. I’m still using the original 1192cc Flat-4 Air Cooled Engine with the original 4-Speed Manual Transmission …sounds crazy but the powerplant and frame only have 56,000 original kilometers! (I have all of the paperwork from the original two owners) This project ended up taking a lot longer than we originally thought and also ended up taking some extra funds out of my pocket, but in the end, I can defiantly say it was worth it…it’s a blast to drive and I’ll tell you this, you don’t see many of these in Canada!

Anyways…on with the pictures!

Before Restoration:

If you have any questions, just ask!
Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Nick

thanks dude!

and i would love some more power…but i have two reasons why i’m going to leave it alone for a while:
1) with only 56 original kilometers, i would just feel bad replacing it
2) i don’t have any money left! hahaha

sweet ride. i just looked at a manx this weekend with a big motor that could use some work. after seeing your ride, i may have to go back and make an offer. i've always wanted a dune buggy. great work.

thank you sir, and i’m glad i went with a dune buggy for my ‘first’ project car - you have a lot of room to work with and the options are endless!

You and your father should be proud. You both did a great job.

Nice! Looks a lot better than it did.

Now that you have a roll bar you can autocross it.

lol, i’d say you’re about right...i push it up my driveway and into the garage by myself!
thanks, and no worries, safety is always first when you have no roof or doors!

i agree! she defiantly needed a face lift!
and autocross was my plan all along, i’ll just need some side-training-wheels first!

Training wheels just put some 800mm spacers on the wheels......and go down to 30 series tires......lol...now that would be badnews....but honestly a very nice project, you and dad should be proud....I personally never got to do anything like this with my dad, so treasure that time...I know you will...tell dad he is top notch..!..

i would love to upgrade my rim and tire setup…but when you have a 5x205 bolt pattern, finding stuff that fits isn’t that easy (and when you find it, it isn’t that cheap! lol)
…i always try to spend as much time with my father as possible, but this was defiantly the best thing i have done with him so far…thanks for the kind words bud.
cheers
