I drove a 2009 Dodge Challenger today
So after drill I decided to go with a friend to take a look at a couple 2009 Dodge Challengers we saw at the dealership. They had one V6 model and one R/T. The R/T was an automatic, with leather and 18" wheels priced at $29,*** and it was "Deep Water Blue". I am usually far from attracted to dark blue like colors but this was kind of nice. The name of the color really explains it well. So for you who don't know what the R/T brings to the table: 370hp/398tq rated at 16mpg city and about 3,700lbs I think. Overall I really liked the car, the design was simple, but very well done in an "I don't think I will get sick of this look" kind of way. The stock exhaust note was rather weak for what the car is so an aftermarket is a must, so isn't a serious drop in the suspension. The car was deceptively fast, 80-110mph went unnoticed but overall I thought it did ok in braking and the twisties for what it was. However I must say that the entire time I was drooling over what the car COULD be after some touches (exhaust, window tint, suspension lowering and some nice wheels would do wonders I think). Here is the car... in stock form

and here is the look I would shoot for if I bought one...

I came within hours of placing an order for an R/T with a 6 speed manual, or an SRT8 with the 6 speed (first round of SRT8's didn't have a manual available) But I needed a new car a bit quickly, and they couldn't give me any sort of delivery date so I ended up buying a Infiniti G35 as a daily driver. But I'm very close to consider trading it in for this car.. The Challenger has always been my dream car (a 1972)

Manual is worse, they make more power... but an EVO is rated at 17mpg city, and I can assure you will get that at best when tromping on it.
I had planned on buying th R/T version because I was unaware the SRT8 was going to be available with the 6 speed pretty quickly. But I needed a car within a few days, and not the "at least 2 weeks" they were saying before they could even tell me what was available.
The Evo was rated at 17mpg or so, but I'm getting 25-27.. I have a Crown Vic that was getting 25mpg, my G35 gets 23mpg
I'm sure driving style, especially for a V8 car has an impact on MPG. In general, manual transmissions get better mileage.
My original plan was to buy the car, and have a supercharger, aftermarket exhaust, and other SRT specific bolt-ons installed before taking delivery of the car. But when they could no longer give me a firm date/time. I just bought the 2003 G35 in cash.
