i have to say that indeed it is a backwards move. you go from a 2006 vehicle, to a 1997 vehicle... age, wear, miles, etc...
also, u gave up ACD, Mivec, and a host of other improvements (after all, u basically went from an evolution 9 to an Evolution 4). yet another setback is that now you have a smallish coupe, rather than a sedan, and, one that had a nicer interior, brembos, and recaros. finally, i also think the Evo is a rarer and cooler car, to put it in "kids terms".

however, once again, i do not know your financial situation, nor your preference of coupe vs. sedan, nor much else. so i cant judge... g/l "

I would do it for lower insurance and no car payment but it's just me.
Actually, in alot of hardcore enthusaists' eyes, the Evolution IV-VI can be considered an upgrade compared to the VII-IX, as the car in many cases has proven to be faster on the track and on the street. So even that point you have made is kinda moot.

I don't understand how do you percieve a four door vs a two door car an "upgrade or downgrade" and not a lateral change. They are two different styles of vehicle, with two different purposes. With that kind of reasoning, going from a Mazda Protoge to a C6 Corvette would be a downgrade.

The only truth to your statement would be the 97 vs 03+ year model vehicle. But it's not like Evos havent been hagged out and beat already, and I've seen plenty of Evolution VIIIs that look as clapped out as some late model 1g DSMs.

Brembos, Recaros, ect. are nice, but so is getting upgraded hard parts cheaper. And it's not like those parts specificly can't be installed on the DSM. So I don't know what the issue is.

If there's any Evo that resembles what a DSM is, it would be an Evo III, not a IV. And even then, they are not the same car. The DSM's use a shortened Galant chassis, while the Evo is...well, you know.

Thanks Captain Obvious. However, Evos receive specially braced and stiffened Lancer chassis with a wider track. Granted a III is a lot closer to a Mirage/Lancer then an VIII/IX or X is, but its still has some notable differences. The same can't be said of an Eclipse, its mostly just a chopped down Galant.

I think it's safe to say he wanted an opinion on the car as a whole. He probably was not looking to get bashed (albeit lightly) and have his finances come into question for making the decision to buy a DSM after his Evo was wrecked. If people can't acknowledge the car for what it is then maybe they aren't true automotive aficionados after all. I don't consider it a step backwards if the person making the purchase is happy. That's just my opinion.

i doubt anyone bashed his decision, even 'lightly'.

to tell someone they disagree with that persons decision, or to call "going from a 2006 car to a 1997 car (from the same company, i may add), 'a step back' ", is not bashing... it is, at the worsts - "stating an opinion"... calling it as you see it...

'bashing' carries a very negative connotation, where someone demeans another, without basis or substance to back up the bashing, and is simply doing it "to hate on another".

it could have been labeled as bashing if someone simply said that the DSMs are "cheap, pieces of garbage... vehicles that belong in the simple, unsophisticated past... vehicle that have little street cred, like 20y old Datsuns and Civic hatchbacks, that only make loud noises".... or something meaningless, silly, untrue, demeaning, or substance-less like that.

here, all people did was state their opinions on the subject matter, and even went so far as to justify them. yet at the end of the day, of course everyone should, and probably does, agree that ultimately, it is the OP's decision, and if this decision made him happy, then great, more power to him.

I'd rather have a sick GSX any day over any evo, other than the Evo VII. Nice car.

So, hypothetically, if someone went from a 2002 Mirage to a 1996 3000GT VR-4, that would also be a "step back?" Since they're from the same company?

unless i missed something, the mirage and 3000GT have never had a single component in common (unlike the GSX and Evos)... so once again, a poor comparison...

Well, I am not sure about that. Maybe people who can afford GSX can't afford to have another Evo? or Evo owners just don't care to have another old school DSMs?

I really don't see them together in a same garage.
i've just got to add a quick comment to this.......
u can find a dsm and evo together in the same garage. i'll agree that most ppl probably can't afford 2 modified cars, nor do they expect to see someone with both of these cars in the driveway, but u can find us if u look hard enuf.
i've got a 06 evo IX and a 96 talon tsi sitting in the garage and they get along fine

but anyways, congrats on the car! its in excellent condition
