What you just described are details. The fundamentals of the WRX and STI: AWD, turbo boxer, layout, chassis, body - are the same. Two "fundamentally" different cars would be comparing a Civic to an Odyssey.
That's like saying the Lancer is basically an Evo or a Ralliart is basically an Evo, the same argument can be applied. The STI, while sharing some features, is a different car than the WRX.

Its starting to look like the new STi is going to be a sedan... Maybe they bumped the power up too. Go Subaru!

Some sources are saying it's a hatchback with a big wing, we won't know for sure until Thursday when it's unveiled.

My wife has a '07 WRX Limited and the '11 is the first model she's actually liked and is tempted to move up to. I personally think its good looking, the bland 2008-2010 styling is gone. Now its time for Mitsu to step up their game with an improved RA model...with an actual manual transmission and lower MSRP to better compete against the WRX.

Damn sexy if you ask me. The sedan that is.. The hatch.. I still need to get use to. I look forward to seeing the "Fastsest STI Ever!" which is basically what is written on their countdown screen.

BTW, more pics here:
