HPA has offered normally aspirated upgrades to 4motion VR6, and have also offered their single and twin turbo kits with or without the 4 motion. The cool thing about the R32 is that it already has the 3.2 liter VR6, beefier clutch/tranny and 4motion driveline, and brakes straight from the factory.
I believe the cost of labor for the stage 1 is $2,500, and the stage 2 $3,500 if I remember correctly. Both include installation of the turbo kit, which involves removing the head and installing a spacer to lower compression. The kit is fairly complex and includes special exhaust fitment etc..... . The stage 2 install adds the installation of a ceramic clutch assembly and a few other upgrades over the stage 1.
I noticed that HPA's site does not have a price listed for the actual turbo kit, but with install labor I would guess you would be looking at $18-$22k for the stage 1 conversion, and somewhere in the $22-$28k range for the stage 2 depending on brake and suspension options. Bottom line is $30k for a new R32, $2k for car shipping, and another $18-$28k for the actual conversion. So about $50k-60k seems about right.
Certainly not for everyone, especially considering the actual investment value of the car will never be recognized as it will always be valued as a $30k high-end Golf. For someone with lots of expendable cash it could be a very exclusive and enjoyable ride, for the normal rabid enthusiast buying a $28k Evo and dropping another $10-$12k makes a whole lot more sense!
