has anyone gone from Evo to 335i, or from 335i to Evo?
I went from an Evo9 into a 135i, but not by choice as my Evo was stolen from me. I couldn't really justify buying a used Evo as I had bought mine brand new and didn't want to chance another casualty of having the car stolen again, so I opted for a used 135i. The car does not in any way handle like an Evo as you know, but it excels as a daily driver and that is what I need. I have only had one issue with the car and it turned out to be a faulty VANOS solenoid which was covered under warranty. Other than that, no issues with the HPFP, injectors, etc. Most people always post about the bad stuff that goes on in their car just like in here, but you rarely hear people who are enjoying their cars. In terms of modifications, it really isn't expensive to modify an N54 to reach decent power. I spent about 2 grand on my 135i and here are my dragstrip results on stock runflat tires (4037):

The only mods done to it are:
Cobb Stage 2+ off the shelf map
Catless downpipes
Aftermarket FMIC
Everything else was stock and still running standard 93 octane. Of course if you want more power than that, then there is larger OEM turbos much like FP offers here for the Evo. And now the big single turbo setups are starting to arrive in which is looking to be very impressive. Here is a video of when it ran at an airstrip event against other powerful cars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydu4YAiYHlQ
In a perfect world, I would keep my 135i as a daily driver and have an Evo9 as a track car/weekend toy.

I was one of the first people in this planet to own one of the first ever sold Evo 8 MR cars sold in the USA and also to own one of the first 335i Coupe. I purchased them both new(the Evo back in Sep 04).
Stock the 335i was quicker and faster on a drag race. I tested this a few times. My 335 i was the coupe with sport package and steptronic.
Changing from one car to the other is going to be difficult. The BMW is much nicer and modern than the Evo as far is comfort, engine noise, gas mileage, safety, equipment. Eventually yopu will want to back to the Evo a few years down the road just like everyone else.
At one point I was the third quickest fastest 335i in the planet. No one had any kind of tune on these cars but I purchased(as crazy as it sounds) the Vishnu procede Piggy back 1.4 ($1400 plus the $85 for the code reader) months ahead before I even purchased my car(crazy No?). Back in 2007 there was a waiting list to purchase the Vishnu Procede piggy back and Vishnu had to hire extra people to keep with the demand and start the assembly of the harness connectors/wires hardware.
Fast forward 5 years and now you can get all kinds of tunes for dirty cheap. You can go ahead and get the 335i and if you don't like it or if you get tired of it you can always go back.
Please PM me and let me know how much are you selling yuour Evo. I am looking for another one as we speak (My forth Evo).
Whatever you do, get the Steptronic, it is a win -win situation. Faster, quicker, better gas mileage, quicker shifting, never miss a shift!! Another thing is the power. The 335i are under rated power wise. Edmunds got 298whp on a 335i with 6 speed manual on a dyno a few years back. These cars can pick 40-50whp and 70lb-tq to the wheels with a tune alone, they are monsters. Don't worry abouyt the power too much, a 335i with a tune and down pipes and pretty close to your current Evo.

Well, back in 06-07 Vishnu had the Procede Piggy back 1.4 and that was the only thing available for tuning for the 335i. Then Terry burger started doing the tunes at the same time and released the much cheaper Juice Box. After the first 2 years the prices fro the tunes went down from $1400 to a couple of hundreds dollars.
IOne of the pioneer companies to release stuff for the 335i was ultimate racing from Canada. I also purchased downpipes from them when no one had absolutely nothing on the market for this car.
Now when you look back it sounds funny to think that I paid $1400 for a piggy back but the fact is that there was NOTHING back then.
On that same note, when I first got my Subaru WRX 10 years ago, Vishnu again was one of the first vendors to have something on the market. You got to give him some credit!!

I went from a 660hp VIII to a 350 hp X to the 2010 135i with the M Sport package. Paddle shifters.
It's been a long while since I've had a rwd car and I remember why I hate it. Unless you want to swing the *** end everywhere you go, it is quite annoying to feel it slipping when it's actually time to GTFO. Oh it's fun and will do donuts like no ones business, don't get me wrong.
The radio and audio sucks.
It's got a tune in it and a K&N. Up about 60 hp and 50 tq.
I don't feel right in the "German Club" getting the "nod" from other BMW and Audi's. It's not me.
I miss my evo. Both of them. If you're looking or more luxury, trade up and get an Evo with leather. Swap in some navigation, or if you don't mind compromising HP (yeah I said that) get an Evo X. NOT A BASE MODEL. Get the leather.
The 135i BMW is a nice, predictable, fun car. But coming from an Evo, you'll be bored quick.

i have owned or driven extensively every 3 series available in US starting the 2006 330i. the current 335i (well 2011, since 2012 isnt available yet) is hands-down a better overall vehicle, and a more well-rounded one than the evo. thats why it costs more too...
BUT, the evo has something intangible - its just more fun! hands down!
sadly, most people cant afford both, so a choice must be made.

I have 135i and VIII. And, I find myself abandoning the bimmer. It is so numb down. There is simply no comparison between the two. If you're driving a evo then you're driving for that particular reason. You won't find it in a bimmer!
Both probably have similar power levels but everything else is completely different. I feel supremely confident in the evo and completely numbed in that bimmer. And knowing that by modding you're tossing out your warranty on that not so reliable trophy. Hey, but chicks dig it!
Don't do it! I wish I can get rid of that bimmer.
Simple economics, see which car is more in demand. There's reason why a decent used evo is in demand.

I've owned an xi steadily since 2001 as my wife's car... 2 330s, a 535 and my current 335. I love bmw and feel it is by far the most compelling overall package vs any of it's competitors.
That said, I just really don't see any non M car as the kind of thing you mod the hell out of and turn into a project. Seems very weird to me and certainly expensive. Of course that's subjective.
When I need to drive to NY or Philly I take the bmw, otherwise I take the mr. The mr is just a lot more raw and fun. Sure it has negative cachet and a pretty lousy build quality and set of ammenities, but to me that all adds to the charm for some reason. Plus modding the evo feels natural and is pretty cost effective (to a point)
Of course it is also true that I flip the bmws every 3 years so they are always new and under warranty (that probably adds to my subconcious feeling that they are better left stock)
Now to be fair, if I was forced to only own ONE of them it would be the bmw... At my age/stage of life there are times the bmw is just more clear of a choice (taking wife to nice place for 10th anniversary, for example), so it is definitely the more well rounded of the two and is a great performer even in fully loaded xi form (hugely heavy, same hp). And it FEELS *much* faster than it is and *far* quicker off the line than my modded mr (even though it isn't) because of how beautifully bmw dialed the turbo in for street starts
If I were to review I'd say:
-luxury - bmw by far
-usability - bmw - folding seats, larger trunk
-build quality/fit and finish - bmw by very far
-cachet - bmw by very far - sure they're everywhere, but it's a bmw... Evo has negative cachet among normals
-running cost - mitsu by a mile if out of warranty, bmw if leased during lease (when all service is basically included)
-mod ability - mitsu (cheaper)
-driveability - bmw on street - turbo lag TRULY doesn't exist in 011... NO "oh $h1t!" moments at intersections ever
-performance 0-60 - mitsu (vs xi)
-handling - mitsu - feels VERY close... IMO evo has higher limits and clearly superior Awd
-fun factor - mitsu by far - the evo feels "special" to me... Bmw no... M3 yes
-cool factor - mitsu - IMO this is an enthusiast measurement... Little kids don't lust a generic 3 series... M3 yes
-looks - too subjective... Bmw is a very nice non threatening shape... Very universal appeal... Mitsu much more aggressive... Women my age smile at bmw/scowl at evo... For young guys opposite may be more likely

if your gonna go with a bmw for performance reasons, my choice would be the 135i. its smaller and lighter than the 335i and more appealing imo. my buddy spent about 5k on performance mods for his 135i and 3 or 4k on suspension and visual mods. that car is f*ckin sick and pretty damn fast. has around 450-500whp with meth, and also handles like a champ.
I had an awesome brand new E92 335i and simple mods added so much whp to the car !!
For people who read all the post of pros and cons i'm gonna add that BMW has longer gears which i love. That means 1st gear u shift like somewhere 40-45mph lol cant remember exactly, and 2nd gear its like 70mph, the great 3rd gear you are at 110mph
So when you street race (lets be honest we all have done it) short gear cars evo has to bang through 1 extra gear during a race =disadvantage
If you want a 335i ... GET WARRANTY because once the warranty goes out, comes all the high maintenance costs.
Now i'm driving a Evo X I'll admit it its a rice car with too stiff of suspension lol random cars always tease me to race them ... which i dont anymore ... i think i'm getting wiser with the age lol and im 26
THE REASON I BOUGHT IT IS FOR TRACK USE
But i like the BMW M cars ... their suspension is much more comfortable and easy on the bump YET the 1M or M3 that i have driven HANDLES SO GOOD... so how did they do that STIFF suspesnion but SOFT on bumps compare to EVO X ALWAYS RAW
