GM is going drifting

General Motors officials confirmed the Pontiac division will tap former U.S. rally racer-***-aftermarket parts guru Rhys Millen to take a factory-sponsored Pontiac GTO into the Sports Car Club of America’s Formula Drift Series. The new racing series kicks off April 24-25 in Atlanta.

Drifting is a form of motorsports developed mostly in Japan and new to the United States that calls for drivers to control a car while sliding it sideways at high speeds through a marked course. It is similar to rally racing but is done on a closed, paved course. It is judged on execution and style rather than just time.

So-called tuners compose its largest audience, according to SCCA officials. In addition, an announcement that Pontiac will also take the GTO road racing in Grand-Am next year with the Pratt & Miller team is expected in the near future. Pratt & Miller runs the Corvette ALMS program as well as the Cadillac CTS-V in the SCCA Speed World Challenge.

If any of you have seen Rhys drifting an Evo (try drifting an AWD car - not the easiest thing in the world), you can only imagine what he'll do with a big HP rwd Holden (aka Pontiac). Since weight isn't a factor in drifting, I think the big torque and rwd will make him a force. Plus he's a pretty good driver, I hear.

I think the domestics should stay away from drifting and leave it to the import cars.

This is just me though

i totally understand your point of view and i agree. but technically the GTO is an import car

and besides, the GTO does have the performance credentials to be a great drift car.

FWD Driver and American !

Drifiting is actually a full sized competition here in Australia, and one that even the normal racers love to see..

We have our own series in every state, and whoever wins that goes to a national comp.. and then to the Japanese comps..

Drifting requires so much more skill then Drags do, i mean how simple is it to drive in a straight line ???

Drifting is the synchronized swimming of motorsports. I pray for its rapid demise from the world of automotive competition.
