But I don't think any of those Car And Driver comparo cars (at least the Evos) were pushing 400 WHP.

Here's a video of an APR Stage III S4 (around $9000) vs a Buschur Stage II EVO (around $2000):

Maybe it is the perspective of the camera angle, but it didn't look to me like the Evo had too much of an advantage. The second run the Evo clearly blew the S4 away and only when he hit the brakes did the S4 catch up....but in the other two vids it looked almost even to me.
Either way, the point is well taken. This car is at least 10k less MSRP and 7k less in mods. And probably corners and stops much better.....so definitely the better driver's car.

I think the bottom line is a much better package has arrived and it's scaring the pants of all the much more expensive cars. Even Stock it's phenominal. I don't think anyone would argue it's more enjoyable stock, it's less expensive to improve, and it's even overall capable of a higher potential. I can't want to see a fully built think HKS Carbon Fiber Evo vs any other fully built car.. Fully built Viper Compeition Coupes, S4s, Ferraris etc. I think at their highest potnetial the Evo still would come out on top. The chassis and 4G63 have simply been honed just like the Vette and the Chevy 350 have. Time has a way of bringing out the best in these things. I'd like to see the HKS Carbon Fiber Evo and the Vette C5R run..
What is the lag like on these cars? I realize on a racetrack you can always keep the revs high by heel and toeing, etc...but on the street. Is the lag or simply lack of displacement annoying on such a small 2.0 liter displacement motor?
Both of my daily drivers have roughly 350 ft/lbs torque from about 2500 rpms.

That was me driving & filming in the Audi S4. I raced Tym in his Buschur prepped EVO (before the turbo/flash swap). He did an 11.8 or something the next day at Norwalk, not sure on pump or race. Bottom-line, his car was faster in 3rd and 4th, I walk him above 125. Both cars are very different now. I recently modded with headers, hybrid k16 turbos, cams, bigger heads, intake, new software, etc. He's done a lot of work to the car since last summer as well. He is still faster and spent a lot less than me, but in the end he's still driving a Mitsubishi. No doubt if I were looking for a 10 sec daily street car, I'd get an Evo. But I believe my S4 is the better all around sleeper car that can walk 911TT's.
3250 or so is the point where the Evo feels less like a laggy turbo car, IMO. SRT4s and STis have much more linear torque pulls and above 2250K don't hesitate much. Since you still have a bit of time from throttle opening to all the air gets moving, it doesn't have that normally aspiratted throttle response, but if you keep in the boost, it is responsive. But goign from off trottle to having fun initially has a bit of delay, but nothing too detrimental.

However, regarding the HKS Evo VS. C5R. I think the outcome would come out like this. The Evo would win on a short track like Tsukuba and the C5R would win on a long track like the LeMans track and Fuji speedway. Bottom line being that the C5R is made to make those long winded runs while the Evo is tuned for short sprints. Anyhow, I would like to see them run at a track like Monaco where you have both tight turns and long straights to see what these cars are really made off.
Laguna Seca MIGHT be a track to compare these two cars on but then again, it has a lot of long straights which would clearly give the advantage to the C5R.What do you think?
Just to keep this post on the subject, Silver TT, if you want to track your future car, get the Evo. If you prize the lux. performance and heavy feel, get the S4. Goodluck with your decision and let us know what you end up with
.
I don't know enough about the HP of the two cars, I guestimated the Evo at about 700HP and the C5R makes about 650? The C5R has plenty of tire, but the Evo has AWD, I would think the all carbon fibre evo would weigh in about 2200 lbs? And the C5Rs are weighing in at 2500.. so I think the Evo would win, but the C5R is also setup for ALMS regulations so, it's hard to compare cars from different series, like an F1 car vs Indy car.. F1 smokes em (all!) I'd be nice to see a group of the rarest all on a handful of circuits for 25 or so laps. McLaren F1, HKS Evo 8.75, C5R, Oreca Viper GTS-R, Enzo.. Is this starting to sound like Gran Turismo 3 or 4? heh.
