Evo VIII vs. Audi S4 with chip.....opinions..
Guys,
I am looking to buy either a new 2004 Evo or a 2000 Audi S4 mainly for road racing and a bit of street cruising. The S4 has a chip and is putting out around 325 HP. I will do all the basic bolt ons to the Evo as well....but probably wouldn't get into the motor or the turbos.
Which will be the faster car on a road course? Which will be more fun?
Looking for your opinions. Thanks guys,
Dan

Actually I remember looking into an S4 also when I first got my EVO. And there is some kind of turbo kit I read about on a few forums that got it up to some crazy amount of Horse and Torque. I'll see if I can find it again and post a link.
Put 4k into an Evo and you have an 11 second car.
Put 4k in an S4 and you have...um...a chip and exhaust system. And you haven't even addressed handling, weight distribution, etc.
There's a reason why my screen name is what it is. The Evo is perfect for what you're looking for.

What does your screen name mean by the way?
Also, what is the breakdown in the 4k? What kind of track numbers are you seeing with those mods and do you retain most of the stock driveability and reliability?
Thanks again,
Dan

Also I don't think a chip alone will boost it from 250 to 325..could be wrong but that sounds like alot. The hot ticket with the audi is to put on the rs4 intercooler, turbos, and some engine mangement...
both of these cars r in a different class IMO...
The S4 is a Luxury SPorts Sedan where the EVO is a performance car!
The S4 kicks a lot of *** too due to its Twin Turbo set up..but I believ the weight kills it..so if u're lookin for car tat can go fast with not a lot of money being put into it, go with the EVO!

bah. get the evo. s4's for yuppies that think they're fast. don't need all that crap that weighs the car down. you want a track duty car, get the evo.
and yes, how does a "chip" add so much horsepower to vws? i keep hearing vw owners speak about getting a chip, as if it'll turn the world upside down and have them at the peak of the performance world.

True - 325bhp = Downpipes, exhaust and chip!
Traded my S4 for the Evo - haven't thought about it since!

Even with these $$$$$ mods, you're talking 425bhp! With a boat load of problems & headaches!!!

At the Audi club track days at VIR, some massaged S4's were pulling me on the straights, but then came the braking and corners, and poof
, no more Audi!P.S.- I'm stock, no mods.
I have both an evo and the s4. They are totally different cars. The s4 has much more refinement and luxury. It also pulls a lot harder on the top end. My s4 is chipped w/downpipes and exhaust.
The evo on the other hand handles much better and is more fun to drive.
When I go on long trips or want to relax a bit I drive the S4.
My daily beater and all around car is the evo.
The weekend top down fun car is the s2k.

Your S4 pulls harder up top because of the DP's. A stock S4 has the same issues as a stock Evo with the weak top end.

(First post, yay me)
Totally different cars, and it really depends on what you want. Stock for stock, the Evo slaughters the S4 in every performance category. S4s can be modded pretty seriously. RS4 turbos, ICs, clutch, etc and the car can be making in the realm of 450bhp. This, however, will run you in the neighboorhood of 7-15k, depending on whose parts and software you use, labor costs and the like. Put the same amount of money into the Evo, and you have a real giant killer. The S4 is heavy, and its weight really kills it. Another thing to consider; the S4s stock turbos are weak, and a chip puts them at even more risk. If they blow, the engine has to come out to replace them. Even replacing them with stock K03's isn't cheap. On the flip side, the Evo's interior looks like a toy compared to the S4, and the build quality, paint, and details are on another level in the S.
If you want maximum fun factor, and the most performance at the price point, get the Evo, hands down.
If you want what I consider to be one of the best daily driven cars, and a great balance of luxury, performance, looks, safety and technology, get the S4.
Both are very capable cars, fun in their own right. But, they come from totally different schools of thought, and are very, very different cars. An S4 will never mimic an Evo's feel, or vice versa.

This is great information and tips from guys that have driven or owned both. Thank you for all the details.
As for weight....does anyone know if there is truly a 400lb difference? That would be huge when it comes to braking and cornering...
