trade evo for e46 m3
From personal experience with owning both I will stick with the evo. The m3 is a fun and somewhat flashy car, but I love my evo actually just sold my m3, the upkeep of an m3 is insane as we'll the oil can only be bought from BMW, it's a 5w60 I think most ppl will tell you no such oil exists. Bottom line stick with the evo the m will just be issues
I had a Dinan supercharged e46 m3; never again will I buy a BMW.
There isnt a very large aftermarket for the e46, repairs are expensive. And there really not that fun to drive, they really only make power at the top of the rpm band and without forced induction theyre dog slow.
If you want a BMW skip the e46 and look into an e92 335i. Large aftermarket and the car responds well to modifications.

Moving this thread to a more appropriate location......
OP, lots of folks here have either come from the M3 platform or have gone to one. Either way, you're making a lateral move IMO, every platform will come with it's share of ups and downs, unfortunately our lot shares a lot of the burden on cost alone.

What I ended up doing was buying a cheap E36 as a project car to satisfy my BMW itch.
--"You vill go left! You vill go right!" -- virtually no road feel. (And a surprising amount of understeer for a RWD.)
I bought a Celica ST-165 instead.
Years later, I test drove an E36 M3 and felt it was disappointing after the AllTrac.
It seemed like a car that couldn't decide if it was a luxo car or a sports car, and wound up not doing either particularly well.
I bought an EVO 8 instead.

(Well, actually, I bought a used Ferrari 328 instead, and then replaced the Celica with an EVO 8 a few years later.)
I'll second the comment about BMWs needing a warranty.
(Do your homework: http://www.carthrottle.com/7-reasons...e46-m3-part-1/)
But even when BMW was giving years of "free service" with their cars, it was still service to the expectations of Biff and Buffy.
("Ah, close enough: it runs (sorta).")
Around DC, BMWs are "the ultimate sit and dither machine".

GPS in the phones; GPS in the cars; and the drivers still think they're in Never-Never Land: Roads full of Lost Boys.

BMWs started well, but have adapted to a customer base more focused on "show" than "go".
The E46 may be an "amazing" car --- compared to a Sentra or SUV.

In European Touring, the M3s would repeatedly get beat by the reboot GTV-6s -- despite the Fiat/Alfas being FWD.

If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, upgrade to a newer EVO.

If you're talking an even swap, then ask yourself why someone would be willing to swap away his E46 to get an EVO 8.

(I'd guess the term "VANOS" is part of it.

(And there's a rumor that "SMG" should have been called "OMG".
