Hoosiers are technically DOT approved, thus, street legal...lol

The ecsta V720 is a 200 UTQG tire though, not a Hoosier, or even an NT01..

EDIT: link to tire on tire rack:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....39-111464156-2

And it does come "shaved" to 6/32" of tread. That could be a decent difference.

UTGA doesn't tell the whole story... if you talk to autocrossers (more going off the previous gen V710), its a near hoosier tire

from my experience, once you get down to 200 and below with UTGA, the number is just a formality with the DOT people... its certainly stickier than Extreme Performance classed tires (per Tire Rack's classing)

Porsche 918 runs Pilot Sport Cup 2 which is the same class of tire as the Kumbo V720, I would say the aero advantage of the Viper is the difference. The previous gen ACR Viper came with Sport Cup tires. When Dodge switched the Viper to Pirelli's it must have decided they did not offer a tire sticky enough for the ACR model so they approached Kumho.

so.. um... my bad... for some reason I was thinking the 918 was on non-cup Pilot Sports...

however, I'd still argue the V720's are stickier... but yes, aero makes a good bit of difference too

its kinda the same thing when the Z28 came out, everyone was riding their ***** about how fast it was around a track and that it "destroyed" a GTR around a track in that one Motor Trend test by like .2 seconds or something...

If you put near slick tires on a car and give it spring and damper to handle that grip, its gonna go fast, its a really simple formula. what makes cars like the 918 and P1 and the Ferrari The Ferrari so special is that they put down staggering laptimes with real street tires.

not trying to say the ACR isn't an awesome car (and the Z28 for that matter, I was blown away when I got a ride in one at the track), but lets give credit where credit is due, its the tires. and people barely ever bring that up, they'd rather talk about the 1 speaker that the Z28 comes with then what actually makes it fast...
V720 is the successor of KU36 and there is nothing to do with V710
It is basically an extreme performance tyre with 200 threadwear rating

Just thinking out loud here, but does that mean the car would need to be equipped with at least 2,000lb springs to offset the 1 ton worth of downforce at 177mph?

Downforce cars typically run a 3rd damper/spring assembly that is only actuated when both sides of the car are compressed equally. Idk if the ACR uses this, but it would seem needed if it really makes that much downforce.
