Car Suddenly Louder

No Evo content here - I've got a 2007 Toyota Corolla, high mileage - ~200k miles, that today suddenly got much louder. It almost sounds good/"mean" from a sports car standpoint, but it is way too loud. I checked under the hood, nothing looks amiss as far as I can tell. no leaking fluids or anything, the car is just like 4-5x louder than it was.

I'm assuming exhaust, but unless I really get in there I can't really tell what this would be. Did a hole form in the exhaust, or maybe part of the exhaust disconnected?

Any experience appreciated

Possibly a cracked or broken exhaust manifold. Won't see it because the heat shield is covering it.

thanks bud. it shouldn't be a head gasket or anything, unless i see other signs right? milky oil, exhaustfumes, etc. etc.

I've heard of head gaskets causing a lot of different problems (symptoms). Louder isn't among them.

Check the catalytic converter to see if it is still there/functioning.

No, not a head gasket.

While catalyst theft is common; I *think* the cat on these cars is integrated into the exhaust manifold. Would be very hard to steal/cutoff the car.

Crack/broken exhaust manifolds aren't uncommon in the little 4 cylinder cars, especially when the cat is integrated with the manifold.

yea again this is a corolla. I don't think the cat's blown out - probably the simplest thing will be to just take it to meineke for a diagnosis

oh random thing I noticed - so obviously the car is way louder - but it also rattles in R after this happened - does that sound like a symptom of anything? very strange... in "P", "N", and "D", just louder - but in R, there's also a rattle. I went back and forth between gears in one spot and the rattle was consistent. i'll upload the video I took later, but

could it not be exhaust related? I don't see how being in "D" vs "R" would cause any noise with the exhaust.

At 200k miles, its very possible for the cat to have blown out, or cracked, or the manifold cracked.

Rattle in reverse vs drive could be a heat shield ratting since the engine torques up in the opposite direction. I would have motor mounts checked as well.

meineke apparently has found the source to be the resonator pipe, which is just the pipe right after the cat and right before the muffler, broken near where it connects to the muffler. don't know how this makes sense given the rattling etc - looked under the car briefly, looked ok - but I will go to a pick n pull place and hopefully find one there for like 10 bucks and see how it goes.

it looks like it's a slip fit kind of deal up front though - does that make sense? I guess the exhaust flow is going the other way but still

OEM is prob one piece. OEM gets cut out, and the new part slips on. It can then be clamped or welded in.

I would have said screw it, buy a cat back system or full exhaust system, and see if it fixes anything XD
