We all have multiples of these little explosive devices (made by others) aimed at us. If they don't kill us they'll, at the very least, total our cars for us.

Airbags save lives, until they become claymores and kill you lol. Unplugged mine for now.

But, brakes, electronics, tires, and suspensions are so much better than what I had in the 73 Pontiac Ventura when I started driving. Pretty much everyone wear their seat belts these days - compare that to lap belts...

"Takata’s total liabilities stand at 1.7 trillion yen ($15 billion), Tokyo Shoko Research Ltd estimated."
I heard on the Automobile Network that GM tried to duplicate the Takata design twenty years ago because it was so inexpensive to build and found their copy sometimes inflated and sometimes exploded. Well, everyone else liked the price.
So now I suppose Takata will be a new entity coming out of bankruptcy and discharge all liability. Will it again be able to make money selling airbags?

I pulled the airbag fuse in my car. Don't need to be killing my wife...

I found it interesting seeing who were the early adopters of the Takata airbag. Some of this will depend on when the maker introduced a new model or where the vehicle was made, for example the Ford Ranger made by Madza, or even when the maker started making cars, for example Telsa.

It looks like, having BMW in the bag, they signed contracts with three car makers per year, probably as they expanded production.
