The only time it really counts is when you're going on a 200+ mile road trip... so if you do that (or a few other niche uses) than an electric car isn't a good option. If you have a house or a condo/appt with chargers installed, an electric car isn't an inconvenience for most people that live in
reasonably populated areas.
Let me be more clear. I don't "want" an EV. In order for me to subscribe to possibly buying one, that's where the tech would need to be. It's needs to be a legit replacement for my gas vehicle.

My truck does 400+ miles unless I'm towing or go off-roading. So, in order to replace it an EV needs to do the same.

but your evo doesn't have a 400 mile range and you had no issue buying that... for me the charge time is a much bigger issue than having a 400 mile range.

and just to be clear, I'm not trying to talk you into getting an EV or anything, just addressing the "So I'm not sure what the rush is." part. I have no plans on getting one either, but its a good option for a lot of people with minimal negatives... and EV's have benefits over ICE cars for a lot of normal people (as in not car people).


funny thing is, I'm usually taking your stance on the whole EV thing in conversations with most of my friends... haha

The "not sure what the rush is" was directed at Kyoo.

I don't have an issue with the Evo being short range because.... its an evo. And I don't take it on road trips. Or tow my Evo to the track with it. Or go on overlanding trips to the middle of nowhere with it. Etc. I already own 2 vehicles, a 3rd is not in the cards, and I'm not selling the Evo, so an EV would have to replace the Raptor.

The hydrogen fuel cell EV doesn't have the range or refill time issues that batteries do. What it does have though is the infrastructure problem. Hydrogen is difficult to store and transport.

Those pesky flammable gases at stored at high pressure.

A hydrogen powered vehicle is... a bit scary. It's even more of a bomb than a truck like kind that could potentially have 36 gallons of gasoline on board.

Lol this EV side debate is getting out of hand. I own an EV. I think it is more convenient than a gas car. I plug it in at night and unplug in the morning (2 second action each). I never have to visit a gas station.....that's FAR superior to going to get gas every week. I also still have a Mazda 3 and though it's crazy fuel efficient it always seems to need gas at the worst times and is inconvenient. I don't like to make detours to the gas station, even though the actual time to pump gas is ~5 minutes. I also still have to do oil changes in the Mazda, which is not a fun chore in the winter. Road trips still an issue? Only if you go to places that don't have fast chargers, which admittedly do still exist. I liken it to finding gas stations with e85. Same level of anxiety. Otherwise it's fast enough and the locations are usually near something better than a gas station (ex: a mall) to spend a few minutes in.

Bottom line is they are still niche and for early adopters but they are rapidly making in-roads into the mainstream. The lifetime ecological footprint myth of EVs has been debunked many times. And it is the future because (other than current purchase price) it is CHEAP (full "tank" = $5) and convenient (unless you road trip for a living) to own. If you already make the range sacrifices in driving an e85 Evo then the big Achilles heel of range and charging locations shouldn't bother you. At least 6 in market EVs have decent range and charging options. It's not yet meant to compete with the longest range, most powerful ICE cars because it's still early days but it's getting there sooner than you think.

You can throw about 37 grand into a brand new base auto mustang GT that will trap 130 (base car for $30K and only Roush blower, about 6 grand).
My 14 traps 126 with no other mods than blower, which I got a deal on for under 5 grand. Is there an electric under 100K that does that yet?

To me if you spent that kind of coin on a ride, it would have to do way better to take the trade in hit.
Lots of downsides to EV's.

Recently had a freak very short storm with 95+ MPH winds that trashed my local area. Power was out almost 4 days.
Could have driven "somewhere" to charge", but I didn't want to leave home with generator running, which was going most
of the day and night........... They don't store fuel that I can transfer to my generator in an emergency. I guess soon you might be
able to charge one car off another and/or have trucks with outlets that let you

Various parking areas on larger properties with multiple family vehicles can be 100's of feet apart. So now you need
a lot of outlets, or some welding grade thick ext cords (also, if you need to plow, better hope you know exactly where those cables are).

Can't charge away from home sometimes. My elderly father was recently severally sick for about 5 weeks (E-coli blood sepsis), I was back and forth between
my parents house, hospital, rehab places, and work. Can't even get a spot in front of parents house many times, and they would only have
110V outlet cord if I could use it. Had been driving home late at night, barely able to stay awake. Yeah, it's only 2 seconds to plug in, but in my state,
barely able to drive, I didn't care less about refueling until it said I had to, which was then 3 minutes ANYWHERE, ANYTIME I wanted.

Just drove from Nashville to Central NJ in 12 hours, straight through. No I wouldn't want to do it daily, but that timef rame is not possible with any electric.
Even the trip we made to DC recently. Yes, you can reserve charger IF they happen to have one where you want to be. Not interested on vaca to have to live my life
around my car.

This is not really directly electric related, but they are so far and few between, I don't see parts being cheap or easy to get in any local yard any time soon.
Not a big deal on brand new stuff under warantee or if under insr, but I can get stuff for my Fusion (heck that engine is one of base engines in the F150, best
selling vehicle in the country) or Mustang anywhere. Even EVO parts are probably easier to get that model3 perf stuff.

Currently Ecars don't even have smaller lifetime carbon footprint than gas vehicles due to the mining and logistics of battery materials, and battery manufacturing and recycling. i'm not saying YOU should - for the average buyer, an electric car makes 100% sense. tech will improve as people buy more and more investment goes into it thereafter

Not gonna lie though, every time I'm behind one in stop and go traffic the thought of "If this thing blows up im so F******" crosses my mind.

if and when ICE cars become niche like horses are now, gas prices will go through the roof. we have economies of scale working for gas prices now... that goes away when 99% don't need gas...

Unless it's a short power outage, when the power goes out gas stations empty out pretty fast too! EVs don't stop working as soon as the power is out. If you're unfortunate and had a low state of charge when a power outage hits then yes you're SOL.

There are systems that actually can use your EV's charge to power your house. It's not all bad news for electrical outages.

I used to think hydrogen powered cars were the answer. But then battery technology vastly improved and their cost keeps coming down every year. Hydrogen....they still have short range, low power, and lots of safety issues. We are 2 innovations away from EV taking mainstream: more stable chemistry during fast charging, and lower cost to manufacture / less difficult to source elements. Lots of proposed solutions in the works but we'll see what comes out.

what hydrogen cars are there on the road now? the only one I can think of is the Civic that Honda put out a while ago, but weren't all of those leases?

I just read a headline the other day about some break through catalyst that was going to improve electrolysis. Haven't read the article yet but there are a bunch of people working hard on making HFC a thing.

The Toyota Mirai is the one I see all the time. Hyundai also has the Nexo which I can't really recall spotting in the wild.

I just did a little digging on the Mirai, and at first glance it looks pretty pricey($58k). However it currently qualifies for 20k worth of tax rebates and credits. Plus Toyota gives you free fuel for 3 year (or $15k max), 3 years of their safety connect, free service for 3 years, and a good warranty. To top it off you get a carpool lane sticker too.

I'm not about to go buy one but it certainly looks appealing for a daily beater.
