CA to change smog laws again come Monday

About 2 years ago, CA started checking random peoples ecu to verify if it had a stock tune in it. I know a few of our Evo members got flagged and sent to the state ref for a reaming. Well starting Monday, every single car gets checked for a modified tune. Doesnt seem like there is going to be a way around this other than putting your car back to stock or hope it runs good enough on a stock cal to set all the smog monitors. This is going to screw a lot of people. Thanks California!

The inspection still relies on self reporting. It's a flawed scheme. It's like just asking an athlete if they have been doing performance enhancers.

Can you explain this please? I'm fairly ignorant to tuning OBD2 cars.

The inspection computer is just asking your car's computer if everything is good.

Ya but if your CVN # and CAL ID dont match what popped out of the factory tune, they will know. As far as I know, no one has found a way around the CVN # since its a checksum thats generated off the actual tune.

That is the way the checksum is supposed to work, but it's just code living in your ROM. Just like the OG Forced pass patch, it can be modified to behave differently.

I got my 2003 Evo 8 smogged 2 years ago and nothing happened. I read that the Evo 9's are really getting reamed.

You two seem to know something special that the rest of us dont know. Care to share? I have yet to see someone successfully change the CVN back to stock after modifying a tune.

My Evo is stock and registered in a no smog area so this really isnt of a great concern to me but I know others that it would help.

So what you are saying is you have no useful info and you are one of the ones that this is going to screw over.... cool. Glad I won't have to deal with any of this until my Supras first smog, in 2029.

Yes, the bread crumbs make sense. Thanks for the tip. BTW, I was talking to a guy yesterday that works for BAR and even HE is pissed about this law because he tuned his truck to compensate for the bigger tires that he put on it and now he is about to get popped as well. He is dying to get rid of his urea system on his truck but is now screwed if he touches it. He also noted that a large part of RV owners chip their diesel RVs and now they're about to get caught by this too.

they are probably not going to post it publicly because every time news gets out, idiots post it all over the internet and get the loop hole closed.
