Dc Evo Club??

Its been down all day. I wanted to make sure it not just me.

Also I am planing on install my HKS 272's this weekend or early next week.

I am looking for the special tool (cam belt tensioner tool?) where do I get one, or if anyone wants to lend me one, or rent me one, that would be great.

I am pretty good with a wrench so I'm going to try it myself. Any tips? how long should it take? Any one want to help or watch??

Thanks in advance for any help.

The tensioner tool is an SPX OTC special order tool only. However! - You can make your own by purchasing a long threaded rod of the same pitch from Home Depot. Don't try it without the tool - you will be out of luck fast. Torque specs are very important - be careful as well. Make sure you note the layout of the cam angle sensor lobe once you take the brass cover off. Have fun!

1. Site's back up
2. AMStuning is awesome - they installed my 272s
3. MadMsheen (among others) did his own cams, you may wanna PM him here or on DC and ask what his advice is from someone who's done it himself at home... Also, he'll be at the Altered Dyno Day on Sat where you can talk to everyone in person.

I did my own cam install a while back. Start early in the day and make sure that the whole day is free.

It took me about 14 hours, doing basically everything myself but with my dad acting as my assistant -- providing tools, lighting, and labeling parts. I did hit a bunch of minor delays. For instance, I had to wait for the FedEx man to deliver the SPX belt tensioner tool before I could proceed. Removing the bearing caps was tricky. Once I'd done a few, I figured out some tricks, but the first few had me worried that I'd ever get them all off. Without impact tools, breaking the cam gear bolts loose (to remove the gears from the camshafts) took some very creative application of leverage involving long-handled wrenches, extension bars, and twisting forces.

Then when it was all re-assembled, the engine wouldn't run. It turned over and made noises, but wouldn't "catch" and run on its own. It took at least 2 hours to figure out that the cam angle sensor harness wasn't plugged in all the way.

I've also heard that some folks have done a D-I-Y cam install in 3-4 hours, and I believe it. Much of my 14 hour install consisted of staring at the open head of the engine and my set of tools and trying to figure out what to do next.

My advice would be to solicit somebody to help you -- somebody who has done the job before. There's no substitute for experience.

Best post, ever. That comes to a $1,050 install, roughly.

Read this before you go to Home Depot. Not saying you couldn't make it work, but just read this post from jfh (directed to me) as fair warning first:

Oh, and rereading that thread, I noticed that my memory has drifted a bit. It only took me 12 hours, not 14...

I know it's 'cuz I'm a lazy ***, but I'd seriously just have AMS do it. As I recall, the price was _extremely_ fair. Definitely faster than $1050 worth of labor time

So are you willing to help me out??

It was brought up that you have done the install many times. Do you want to do it again?

I have to get it done before Al from Dynoflash come down to tune my car. It should be this week or next week. I'm not sure because he has not posted a date yet. He said the week of the 22nd??

I wanted to try and do this myself, but I would rather be taught how to do it for the first time?

Let me know what you think and what it might cost me. Could I come and get it tonight meet at Best Buy or at the Mitsubishi dealership?
