We don't need no stinking special tool!

I still have plenty of 8mm x 1.25 threaded rod if anyone is feeling lucky.

puckadog, jfh, anybody...

Can I borrow or rent the MD998738 timing belt tensioner tool from anybody, or perhaps jfh's solution with threaded rod might work? I would like to get the cam install done this weekend, my helper's schedule permitting.

The pictures I've seen of the tool look like it's just a threaded rod with a hex head attached on one end? If so, I can probably build one myself if need be. It sounds like that's what jfh did -- if it's 8mm by 1.25 threaded rod. How much torque is required to tension the timing belt?

Jack,

Don't risk doing it with a homemade tool unless you can get threaded rod made from tool steel. The mild steel that I used would not withstand the required torque to releive the belt tension and it snapped. I had to follow complete timing belt R&R procedure to locate and remove the 2" section of broken rod. It came to rest on the inside lip of the timing belt idler pulley and required removal of everything to finally locate and remove it adding many hours to an otherwise simple installation. I ordered a tool after that fiasco but they are out of stock and it will not ship until 21 Jan. Borrow meanmudd's tool!

Can you explain how to do the cam swap without the tensioner tool? I'm planning on doing mine nthis weekend.

Thanks.

I think he's saying not to try it without the tensioner tool - unless you thread some very strong tool steel that can withstand some good torque.
