I used meanmud's tensioner tool today to do the cam install. It's a big job if you're just used to simple bolt-ons -- it took me 12 hours from start of set up to finish of clean up. If I had to do it again, I'd still budget at least 6 hours. But you will learn a lot if you do it yourself.

Oh, and make sure all of your electrical connectors are tight when finishing up the job. I tried to start the car with the cam angle sensor connector not on tight. You can guess how I was a bit concerned when it cranked but wouldn't run. I had visions of spending all day tomorrow doing the job again, before I found the loose connector.

jbrennen,

You think its possible without the tensioner, or would it be very very hard.

I am not sure I'd try the job without the tensioner. I'm sure it's possible, but everything I've read implies that without the tensioner tool, you'll need to take off the lower timing belt cover. It's clear that's not a trivial task. For me personally, I'm sure that would have stretched the job from taking one long day to taking two days.

congratulations jack! i'm glad everything went well. i hope any tips i gave you helped.
i wouldn't try the job without the tensioner tool... unless you can find a good STEEL 8mmx1.25 thread bolt about 8" long that you could subistute for the tool.
see you in three weeks jack
i hope shiv doesn't have to tune our cars with a sub zero degree map! i'm sure we'd make some good power but the water in our IC spray tank will be frozen!!! and when it warms up our maps might be on the rich side.

jbrennen,

Need Puckadog's phone number desperately. Please call 302-379-6585. We're working on Meanmud's car right now.

Thanks.

Shiv, other participants:

What sort of adjustments can we expect to make on the tuning day? I assume that everybody will be doing XEDE tuning for power on street gas.

But of course there are some other things to try. These three come to mind:

- Idle throttle adjustment to steady the idle with the cams in.

- Cam gear adjustment. Maybe -3/-3 can be improved on?

- Race gas mapping for the XEDE.

Took the Evo with the 264i/272e (-3/-3) cams out today for a brief warmup and acceleration test. I'm running the 91 octane Stage 1+ map that MP5 sent me, with 94 octane Sunoco in the car. It felt really powerful up top; I can't compare it really with the Stage 0+ with 93 octane map which I was running before the cams went in (two days apart, and I only had the Stage 0+ for 8 days -- not long enough to really get used to it). I can't wait to get a custom tune for 94 octane; it should really put up some good numbers.

It only gets better! It is a fast MF car!

Shiv and East Coast EVOs,

Can you make sure you post a dyno sheet of the gains of a stage 1 and stage 1 + cars before and after tuning/Xede/Xede-Flash/X-Flash?

I imagine its gotta be A LOT!

Thanks.

Check in after the 31st - I'm sure you see lots of posts with results!

As far as stage 1 cars, 4 of us (Delturbo, jfh, puckadog, and myself) were within 310 - 320whp on a DynoJet.

Is this before or after tuning, XEDE stage 1 or what?
Thanks.

the #s meanmud put up... all of the mentioned cars have, exhaust system (diffrent makes), down pipes, xede and cam gears... oh and 3' cats too i believe. after shiv's tuning our #s were all between 310-320 whp on a dynojet awd dyno.
i'm not sure what make of dyno AA has (anyone know?) but i'm anxious to see our #s too!

Hello Evo1

Evo1 Are you happy with those mods? How is the car as a daily driver? Is is sick fast? I live in Tampa, but I work down in Bradenton. I am picking up my car today. I ordered the Vishnu turboback exhaust, xede, cam gears, 264/272 cams, silicone hoses, brake lines, tein flex coilovers yesterday. Hopefully will have all the parts within the month. Are there any other EVOs from the West Coast of Florida on here? Who installed all of your stuff? Have you taken the car out to Bradenton speedway yet? Thanks

For all of you who have the 264/272 HKS setup, what are your settings on your cam gears?

Thanks.
