Those compression #s seem low. Mine were all 175 a a month ago. I would suggest doing a leak down test to confirm the cylinder walls were not scuffed and the piston rings were not damaged when the turbo let go. There may be metal that has found its way into the head and has possibly done some damage to the valves. Agian a leak down test will confirm weather the valves are not sealing properly or you have a piston, or ring problem.

I would now be worried if there was any metal that has traveled through your motor from the center cartrage of the turbo. That would be really bad on all of the main & rod bearings as well as the piston wristpins, oilpump and oil cooler. Then on the head you have the cam berings, and lifters that would not like metal shavings being circulated around in. Hopefully this is not the case.

Hope that helps alittle,

Eric

I agree the numbers are low - The last time i ran the test it was 160 all around - leak down test is same as compression but with a little oil in the cylinder correct?

*edit*
what i was thinking was to see if rings were the issue
http://www.type2.com/library/engineg/leaktst.htm
*edit*

I don't think any metal from the turbo on the cold side got into the engine, the turbo was only blown up on the exhaust side...im not entirely sure why that happened - was thinking maybe oil pressure dropped and turbo was first thing to bite the dust from heat or something let loose in the engine and took out the exhaust side...

If you decide to just replace the turbo I have an 05' turbo with out the hotside. It is in excelent condition and could sell it really cheep to a local. It is just taking up space in my basement. You could use your existing hotside for it. Let me know

For your compression test...

Was your motor warm?
Did you have the throttle pedal to the floor?

Leak down test is diffrent than compression test. The leak down has 2 gauges and you use compressed air @ 100psi line pressure at TDC. The second gauge shows you how much air is excaping either through the rings, exhaust valves or intake valves.

You dont want to see anything more than 10% leak down per cylinder. Actually 10% is pretty bad for a street motor.

I already replaced the turbo ( i had a TME turbo) - first thing I did when i got the car in the shop was pull the intake hose and feel the shaft play - was about 1/2" So we disconnected the coolant lines and pulled off the turbo and replaced it with my stock one. Car was still acting up after replacing the turbo.

Motor wasnt warm (doesnt want to run really) I was under the impression you only cranked the car for the test and wouldnt hold down the throttle . Leakdown test sounds like it would point me in the right direction - problem is currently I have no way to perform the test because my car is sitting at my apt, I couldnt leave it at the shop it was at. I imagine if i got the tool i could do it with one of those fill up tanks you can get, eh?

When compression is low just turn the boost up.

So is the motor toast or did the turbo just die?
