As some of you may know, I help instruct for the SCCA on track days. Next weekend is their 2nd full-day track event on the infield course at Gateway in St Louis. This is not a cone-dodging AutoX - this is a fullspeed track event on the roadcourse/roval.
I've already signed up to instruct. I'll bring the car and probably give rides to my students as well. Shout out if you're going to be there.
Track tires for the event if anybody needs them!

Hey boomn':

Who are you using for alignment now in the STL area? Anyone? Or are you getting suspension support form AMS at various events?

I need to install new strut bearings (trying out Grp. N before I give up and start putting up with monoballs on the road...RobiSpec KWv3s are murder on stockers...) and that will definitely mess with alignment.

I've been doing my own alignments this year actually. I leveled the garage with tiles and use the string method to check toe. It's not 100% precise as the laser alignments but I like being able to check it myself and not have to worry about taking my car somewhere. I get suggestions on alignments and suspension adjustments from Mueller out in CA since I'm running his Muellerized JIC's.

I've used a few different places to install bushings. I'd recommend calling Ron and he'd easily take care of it.

String alignment done well is better than any machine. Good enough for F1, CART, ALMS...good enough for me.

After I get the garage floor redone in our new (to us) place, I plan on investing in the stuff to do my own string alignment (I know, I know...I could just do jackstands, but that isn't overkill enough for me. ) The amount it would take to level the car on my floor now would be a royal pain, too. I can't wait to get it redone with a vapor barrier (no more sweating floor!), radiant heat, and LEVEL!!

I plan on getting a set of Smart Strings to do settings with. The nice thing is you can roll the car back and forth to settle the suspension after an adjustment and not have to reset your strings since they move with the car. I've used them before and they're pretty neat-o. ART laser strings are pretty nice, too, but mucho mucho dinero.

A trick for slide plates...but you may already know this: use two pieces of Masonite, slick sides facing eachother with a plastic t-shirt bag (the nasty bags you get at every grocer, Wal-Mart, etc.) laid flat and smooth between them. The rough side of the Masonite will be facing your tires and the floor. The bag makes a nice low friction interface between the slick masonite so when you let your car down on them after leveling, the suspension can slide a little to settle to a natural position. Bags > grease! This is also really portable to take to the track, too.

Practice and take your time with strings, and lasers are NOT necessary at all.

Until I can get my garage sorted, though, I will prolly hit up Ron.

Any events coming up?

Yeah, I've looked into that string setup. I seen a video from like GoTo Racing or somebody that aligned a Miata. Just gotta have secure mount points on the car.

As for the bag idea; I'd never heard that. I know grease is the standby, but I'd never do that messy crap. What I use....salt! It lets you turn the wheel and rotates the top plate(s) just fine.

And yeah, I was out at Gateway this weekend instructing for the SCCA. Seen a couple Evo's there; gave one guy (Desmond) a test drive. Dunno if he's on here but found him sitting in a nice clean GG 06 MR.

Here's some pics my g/f helped take:

Never thought about salt for the slide plates...that's a good one.

Nice pics. I wanted to try and make that event at Gateway, but work once again conspired against me. I got stuck down in Little Rock this weekend. All wasn't lost, though...got to go to the dirt track races in Beebe, AR. That was a hoot. The mini-mod class was fun to watch...little modified looking cars that ran on 1000cc crotch-rocket motors. Quick little buggers. Spent Sunday cutting down 11 large white oak trees and removing the stumps for a friend's new house lot...driving quickly on a track would've been much more fun.

Let me know when your next TA event is...I would like to spectate if it's a resonable distance.

yeah the salt works great. I messed up though and bought the ceramic tiles, so I've already cracked several and tossed them. Honestly I haven't really changed much on the car this year with regards to the alignment. I've only tired 2 changes to the suspension and 1 and changed back!

I'm going to Gingerman with NASA this weekend which is up in Michigan. Then the first weekend in October is the final NASA event over by Indy at Putnam Park. I think there's another SCCA PDX at Gateway but not 100%.

Word up STL! I see the Evo meet is going just about as well as we all thought it would! So I'm saying screw you; I'm moving.

Seriously though, I will be moving up to Springfield, IL shortly. So not like my car was out and about much in STL anyways; but it'll be moving. Have fun; I'll still be visiting periodically for Cards games and some track events. Rumor is NASA will be back in April/2010.
