Crystal Lake emissions testing...anyone do this?
Tis the season for emissions testing…or at least for me. lol
Anyone have any experiences with testing in IL and the best places to get tested? What's the process like do they do any visual inspections or just plug in the computer? I haven't tested a car since they used to run the cars on the dyno and I remember that they did check under the car then with little mirrors.

Illinois emissions are pretty straightforward: an OBD-II test, and a gas cap seal test.
For the OBD-II test, as long as you don't have a CEL, and all your readiness tests have completed (failed tests will show up as a CEL, but incomplete tests won't), you're good to go.
For the gas cap, just make sure the gasket is in good shape. Honestly, you'd probably need to have a decades-old cap for it to be a problem.
In the past, I've also seen them take air samples around the engine bay, but I don't recall if that pre-dated the OBD-II cutover.
More information from the Illnois EPA website: http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/about.html
Note that they mention the gas cap test is only for heavy vehicles; I've had it done the last few times I've had vehicles in for testing, however.

I will pass the OBD-II test I'm running TephraMod 5 and spacer on the o2. What I'm worried about is the visual inspection, but from what you said it maybe they don't do that anymore.
I've found the best place to take the test is on RT. 120 just east of RT. 12. (VOLO) They've ALWAYS been nice there. No attitude like they're doing you a favor. I tried CL one time and they weren't very nice.... (I was in a 400whp Astro-van though and they didn't find it amusing...AT ALL.)

Hey sarah, it seems our numbers are dwindling...or maybe I don't get out enough? lol Anyway, I've been down in Florida for a little while met up with some of the guys down here. I'm headed back to Chicago for the summer. Does any of the CL crew still meet up?
