***Evo X Timing Chain and Tensioner Failures***
We've had a bit of an uproar with the Evo X services lately. Not general services but two item in particular....ACD pumps and Timing Chains.
Timing chain and tensioner failures are surprisingly becoming a large enough issue for us and our dealer to take notice. For the work that was past it's warranty phase and the declined "good will" repairs, the clients were referred to us so there is knowledge about it and there is a simple log of the failures as well.
Now, this is where it can be a bit touchy so please pay attention as some of you may already have these symptoms.
Inconsistent driveability
Mile loss of power
Mild loss of fuel economy
Inconsistent Idle
Unstable or "hunting" idle
Aggressive sounding camshafts
Poppy or tingy exhaust note
Misfires
Cam Position Timing CEL's
Hard starts and long start times
No start, engine simply turns over
The list is going from least to most aggressive of failures and how they evolve essentially.
If you have any symptoms, please start acknowledging that if all other diagnostics seize to show any results, this may be an option to look into.
Is it possible that this issue may be persisting due to the cold? Possibly, as the previous generation Evo's have had frozen tensioners which caused heartache for the owners. The real dilemma is when the tensioner is completely exposed and the chain still has slack in it...that's pretty easily identifiable.
Will Mitsubishi do anything for you? Of course, if you are within the warranty period of the engine and it's corresponding coverage. Will they acknowledge that a failure is existing? Probably not HOWEVER, Mitsubishi is one of the few companies out there that even before would not only acknowledge an issue but take it a step further with preventative replacement.
Lets hope this will be a fluke and a non-existent issue to most but for those who are having a bit of trouble with those symptoms let your local professional know and hopefully a resolution can be found.
For the ACD pumps, you have options as a client. Rebuild or Replace. You can be out 600+ dollars for a rebuild and if it doesn't work then you need to replace it regardless...then you can call the original finances a wash which sucks but it does happen.
Now, upon rebuilding or replacing a unit you also get the added bonus (if replaced here) of either reinforcing and covering the unit with our designed guard OR relocating the unit entirely into the trunk area.
Washing the vehicles undercarriage does nothing to prevent/promote failures so don't worry about that. Going through the city streets with the debris and salt though, yes, that is the concern. Doing whatever you can to PREVENT a system failure is the best way to protect your investment but it doesn't always work out that way no does it.
So, with that in mind, we are offer a simple "rebate" type of program with what will hopefully be a new relationship with manufacturing and distributing of re-manufactured pre-assembled ACD/AYC pumps along with guards and seal kits. We can't get enough of them that are in proper working order though and while working with the Mitsubishi tech system, there may NEVER be enough good cores as those that are good....they just don't fail.
If anyone is interested in that offer as well, please feel free to contact us in regards to the service and rebate program.
Thank you from the APM Team!!!

We've already put another 3 successful revives to the list! Car dipped into a bit of low voltage and the cam and timing codes were pulled from the CEL. Told the client if it IS NOT off then I'll cover the labor for the inspection, off 2, gave him back his inspection fee anyway when he came back to get the service done.
