SST to 5 Speed Conversion Completed

Well after over 2 years of dealing with my SST I decided it was time for a change. Ever since I upgraded the stock turbo I have been laced with problems trying to make the power. I did not want to wait any longer for a solution with the TCU and clutchpacks. I decided enough was enough and the only viable solution for me was a manual transmission.

I have finally got the conversion completed and I am driving the streets with my new 5 speed transmission.

Listed below are the parts that I needed to make the transformation:

Left front Axle
Slave Cylinder
CMC
Brake Fluid Reservoir Assy
Clutch Pedal Assy
Brake Pedal Assy
Lever Assy M/T Gearshift
Shift knob
Shift Boot
Front Chassis Harness
Engine Control Harness
Clutchmaster 850 TD 6.5
Manual transmission

The only part I did not buy that I will look to source is the ECU. Currently the car is running with the MR ECU but I have the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. I am just happy to have her back and will work thru the ECU issues over the next couple of months.

This build could not of happened without the help of my shop Performance Race Solutions.

A ton of money. The parts alone cost about 5k because of the tranny rebuild and bad *** clutch. I am still waiting on final labor costs. I also have to sale my old tranny and oil cooler that will definitely help the final cost.

If only you had done some more research. The SST has been cracked. It won't be long now and the SST will have almost no power restrictions. Sure it might not handle the power the 5 speed does but since so few go for that power level I think it's moot.

For less money you could have upgraded the top of the line Dodson upgrade kit.

This tranny swap has been in the works for months now. I was tired of waiting on the hope of the future, been doing that for almost two years now. Also Dodson did not have the pro max kit out.

Congrats on the swap. I don't think i would have gone that way. I think I would have just taken the hit and traded her in.

Or alternatively, our SSP clutch packs/tuning that have existed for 2 years...

We've had a 550whp/430wtq (on a Mustang dyno to boot...) for a really long time. It's tracked regularly for Real Time Attack and has virtually no problems.

I think Razorlab has an even higher HP SST and there's someone out there that I think is nearing the 600whp. I need to find that link.

That being said, cudos to you for doing a pretty amazing swap! I can't even imagine the costs and labour involved. To each their own and your car is your own personal choice. I think it's awesome but the SST is definitely along its way.

The other thing is, even with less power, an SST with Super Sport will destroy the 5spd. In terms of performance, it's not even comparable. Launch Control and the speed of the shifts in the SST make a huge difference.

The SST TCU can be flashed, it hasn't been hacked yet from what I understand.

They're unlocking more and more. When it will be fully unlocked, no one really knows. But it can still allow for quite a bit of power at this point. I guess it's personal preference. I now have Super Sport in my Ralliart and it takes on some much higher powered rivals and I almost always destroy them haha.

Also in terms of efficiency, and moving forward technologically, DCT's are really where cars are going to be in the future. Most cars, high powered and regular alike will mostly be DCT. Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini are all going that way. There's a reason the GTR only comes in a DCT...you could never get the GTR to perform that way at 2 tons with a manual gearbox.

There's definitely something to be said about the 'fun' factor of a manual gearbox/clutch but in terms of performance/efficiency, it can never match a DCT.

I have ran two different types of SSP clutch packs in my car and I honesty think the stock ones performed better. Even when the car was making power with the SST it always seemed to slip. I was on the fence with trying the Dodson products but in the end decided to take the manual path. I have been fighting this car for the last two years trying just about everything on the market. I am happy that it is finally running again.

We already tried flashing a GSR rom with no luck. It would not start.
