2G GS-X help

Ok so I want to get some help from the GURU's on this sight. I have been lurking for a while as a guest and decided to join this site to start getting help....

So I recently purchased a 98 GS-X. This is my first real DSM and I plan on keeping this one. A little back history for those who are interested... I picked this car up for 2K with a fried harness across the fuel rail. I replaced the harness and started the car up after it had sat for 4 years. Runs perfectly with NO issues. I've have been searching on mods to be done with the gsx and read that the 16G evo-III turbos are the best upgrades to go with. Upon further research, I found out that my turbo isnt stock.... its a 16G. So now I begin searching the metal stamp on the housing to reveal what I thought was a big 16G turbo. Now I'm not so sure anymore. Two people that have worked with 4G63's say that it looks like a real 16G but the boost psi is only at 8psi at fulll boost. They claim that a 16G is supposed to be set at 10-12 si stock. How can I tell what turbo I have or can someone who is better at this than me possibly tell me what I actually have on my car. Im dreading that I have an Ebay knock off. thanks to anybody who can help.

Get a better shot, or write down the numbers and start googling.
The guys over on DSMtalk, or DSMtuners would probably be more helpful identifying an E3B16G than most people here om EvoM.

Looks like a knock off to me. Real MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) turbo don't have "DSM" or EvoIII stamped on them. My GS-T has a real Evo3 turbo and while I don't remember exactly what it says, it certainly doesn't look like that. Its just some sort of serial number.

Even if the turbo is a knock off you still picked up a GS-X for $2,000. I would take the good with the bad. And congrats on that deal. Those cars were "it" back in the day.

As was already said, I'd have to agree with you getting a good deal. Also, unfortunately, that's definitely a knock off turbo, get an FP HTA68 and it'll be an easy swap. Good luck man and show some more pics if you got time

A knock off yes but does the turbo have any issues. What do you hit full bost at? it looks like an evo 3 16g turbo. If it is, they are very very nice turbos!
