STU & Adding a front LSD to an 03 EVO?
STU & Adding a front LSD to an 03 EVO?
Apparently it is ok to add an front LSD to an EVO in ESP class. Is it legal for STU?
Also, what is the approximate cost of the Quaife LSD? And is it an install I should try on my own or would I be better off paying a pro?

No not legal for STU because you already have a rear LSD.
Your only allowed to add one LSD diff if the car does not have one already.
For example, the base model eagle talon tsi AWD came with no rear LSD (I know, I owned one of these models) With the current STX/STU rules, I could upgrade one single diff... When I got the WRX, no diff options were allowed because the car already came with a factory rear diff.
The quaife will run you about ~$1500, it's possible to do the install yourself.

That is a bummer. I got to ride in an 03 w/ a front LSD. It was freaking amazing. The driver isn't half bad, but I'm pretty sure having the front LSD helped.
Maybe I'll save the $1500 and trade in the 03 for an 05.......

Update/Backdate rule for SP applies to ST as well IF the 2 models are on the same line in the rules AND IF you make all the changes necessary to convery one model to another.
Here are 2 made up examples
Example 1 - Let's say that a 1991 BMW 325 could be had with an optional LSD. You own a 1990 BMW 325 which appears on the same line in the rulebook and did not have an LSD as an option. You can install the LSD from a 1991 BMW 325 in your car.
Example 2 - Let's say a 1997 Miata was avaible with a 6 speed tranny as part of the Sport Package (which also included bigger brakes, leather seats and a faster steering ratio) If you had a non-sport package Miata, you COULD NOT install the 6 speed in your car unless you also added the leather and the brakes.
So, in the case of the '03 Evo, my question is was the LSD available as a stand-alone option in '04 or '05 (the answer is no). So, to add the LSD you could:
1) Convert your '03 Evo to an '04 RS (remove the ABS, remove the trunk interior, add the rear performance bar, remove the power windows, power doorlocks, HID headlights, foglights, remote control light levelers) - You are not going to do this option.
or
2) Convert your '03 Evo to an '05 GSR. (add the LSD and the new Turbo inlet stuff, remove the HIDs)
Either way it would be cheaper to buy an '05

alan

I believe allowing exchange between year models is allowed in SP but not in ST. In stock and STU/STX you can change between models of the same year, provided you do a complete conversion. 04 EVO to 04 EVO RS but since there were no RS models in 03 you can't do a complete conversion .... that is what I remember reading ...
headache. Sound like I'll just wait for a IX and step up to that. Which means I'll continue training w/ this car, but not install the coil overs. Luckily I can pull the XEDE and send the ECU in for a flash when I sell the 03.

Like jwtodd60 points out, there is no update/backdate rules in ST.
I would still go with the coilovers, you can gain alot in STU, and when you decide that it's cheaper to run on race tires, you can install the LSD and jump in to ESP.

After taking two days of evolution school, I'm a bit less concerned about the front LSD now. I think adding good tires (going to stick with Kumho MXs) and a great set of coil overs will allow me to start mopping up in my region. I'll give that setup a year or two and then move over to a IX after Berry and Daddio figure out the problems with it.
As usual: the advice on this board is great.

Top CSPer George Doganis has been talking to me about getting an Evo for the past year or so. He drove our STU RS today and had an incredibly fast raw time in it.
Just to re-iterate... there is no UD/BD in ST. That was done away with 2 years ago to prevent frankencivics.
It falls back on the stock way of 'package conversion'. You'd have to essentially make your car exactly the same as whatever car you want the parts from... every single part that is different must be put in.

At this point I have decided to stick w/ the '03 w/o a front LSD. I'll buy a IX in a couple of years. That way I should get front LSD w/ ACD too. Hopefully I'll be good enough that it won't matter.

I think I heard about M. Madarash in ESP competing against him?
Are you planning to go to Topeka this Sept? I wish I lived in Texas - just a short drive up
Anyone interested in the STU class should grab a codriver and enter the finals this year - it's a big party. If this provisional class fails to get 25 drivers entered, STU will most likely be dropped in the future everywhere.
Maybe KC can elaborate further?
Yes, Speed Racer (Madarash) is having a hell of a time keeping Racer X off the podium. What is great about it is both are fantastic drivers. Watching them driver is like watching a genius at work, they literally make their cars dance.
I got to ride in Berry's car which is what got me thinking about the front LSD.
Unfortunately I don't have nationals on my calendar and it is a bit late for me to add it. I have a feeling that they will get 25 drivers. Dallas alone has 5 - 10 STU drivers regularly showing up. Several of them will be going to nationals.
I'll add nationals to my calendar for next year.
