if track days are all you aredoing, then consider a spec miata, cheap fast and fun! it can keep up with high hp cars with the right driver

yeah, but I would be driving a miata.

What about the new Mustang GT500. They said that it should outperform the new C6. They will be hard to come by but I have a couple of friends that own Ford dealerships so I may be able to get one.

my order:

Z06, elise, Evo, Spec miata

the Z06 with good driver and sticky tires would be SICK...
the elise would just be awesome (might be too small)
the Evo go with the wheels, tires, suspension, brakes and learn to drive the hell out of it and you'll be hard to stop (Mueller)
Spec miata, fun as crap, CHEAP, well backed, but a miata in the end.

I like the Elise and I have been with them on the track. Incredible in the corners, but 190 hp just ain't enuf, even in a car that weighs 1975 lbs. My RS runs away from them like they are standing still coming out of corners onto the straights.

I like Z06 too, but it is just so ******* BIG.

Well,

I just ran with a bunch of elises at Reno-Fernley, and they were damn fast, and it's a high speed track. With the right driver, an Elise can hang with most evos, as it is a combination of having good, not crazy, power, and being a "momentum" car like a spec miata. Stuff that we have to brake for they can lift for. I'm not a slow driver and not the fastest either, I'm in the 2:11-2:13 range at thunderhill, and some of those Elises handed me my ***...in the hands of a great driver they are formidable.

Also,

If I had to do it over, I love my Evo, but I would have waited for an Elise.

you can also check out used race prep cars, that way all the safety features are in place already...the faster you go, the more the need for a good rollcage

Is there a good spot to look on the internet that has used race prepped cars for sale?

I would buy an 03 cheap and build a dedicated track car.

You are there for less than 50k and it will kill any of the other cars you are thinking of as well as be a lot safer. I saw an evo that rolled at Willow Springs at over 100 mph multiple times and the owner walked away with minor injuries as opposed to 2 folks killed in their porsche gt at cal speedway recently.

The difference? The evo was a prepared race car from RRC by John Mueller. It was equipped with full cage, fire suppression system etc. and it saved the drivers life.

Safety first= fun + fast and you will have more fun running down a zo6 or viper with a race evo than the other way around...

Wouldnt any model 05 or an 04 RS be a better bet because of the limited slip front diff? I have heard that was one of the biggest complaints of the 03s.

I agree that it would be more fun beating a big V8 or V10 with the evo than vice versa.

beating a VERY modded non street legal race prepped mustang at the track was a blast. along with the m3's and STi. all in the rain. so much fun. granted, driver ability probably had a TON do do with that...

If you gut it....supercharge it........and slap some good coilovers on it...........The E36 M3 can be one hell of a track car.....
