Racing Harness Question
Racing Harness Question
I'm going to start AutoX and track events so want to install a racing harness in my Evo VIII. I have 2 questions:
1. I can put a 5 point harness on our stock seats, right?
and
2. Do i need a harness bar installed for this, or is there another method of installing the harnesses? And do the bars need to be welded or can they just be removable when i decide to sell the car...
any recommendations for either harnesses or bars?
Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated..

1. yes, but you'll have to mount the crotch strap on the floor beneath your seat.. and cut a hole through your seat. For track events a 3" - 5point harness will do great, not sure if that is needed for auto-x'ing..
2. Yes, Sparco harness bar will work just great.... no need for welding it in.
Just search for Sparco, Schroth, Takata, etc harnesses and you should find something good. Look for some sort of certification label for the harnesses.

Anyone who races and most people who do lots of high-speed track events will tell you this is a very bad idea. We tend to see safety "upgrades" as all-or-nothing: either do it right (i.e., fixed-back racing seats, 5- or 6-point 3" camlock harness, minimum 4-point roll bar, +/- disabled airbags) or keep it stock.
However, many people who auto-x and do low-speed events seem to feel that it's unnecessary to be so strict. They feel comfortable with stock seats and harnesses without roll protection. When they see evidence of people being hurt badly using such set-ups, they argue that it would have been worse with stock equipment. And no one can really argue one way or the other since there's no real evidence either way.
However, I think it's safe to say that just about everyone agrees that:
harness bar + collapsable seats - adequate roll protection = serious injury

If you're only going to use it in autocross, you should be ok with just the harness. But as said above, it's a dangerous combo in the event of a rollover. Since you're more likely to get struck by lightning than roll over in an autocross, it was never an issue for me. BUT I never wore the thing any other time. If you want to be able to wear it, or maybe do a track session, you should really consider a rol bar. I believe they have bolt-in models, so all you have to do is cut some carpet and drill a few holes.

I didn't get that about the seat, but, if you get a racing seat, keep the use of the regular seat belt, for daily driving it is miles ahead of a harness. mount the clicker to the seat base.
