Ive spoken with the driver of this car Dave Brown (the 2005 USTCC champion) at length about this car and the coming season. He has indicated that the evo has been laden down with a significant weight penalty and now has a race weight 3600 lbs! I saw the car at an Infineon practice and they now have huge weights bolted to the floorboards.
The first race must have scared the organizers a bit becuase the evo and the subaru legacy gt were 6 seconds a lap quicker than any other car. The other awd car, a suby sti was driven by a rookie and doens't really count. What wasn't accounted for that weekend was the fact that on the dry Friday practice, pretty much all the top cars were within 6 tenths of each other. If the race was dry it would have been a very even field. Due to the rain it was a walk away, but thats to be expected when you have awd. On the other hand having a car walk away from everyone doens't help the race series, in some ways this may make the season even more interesting and a better show.
Bottom line is that Dave had to relearn the car. After seeing him on track in HPDE4 (ok mostly him passing everyone) and the times he was pulling towards the end of the day, it appears hes ready to kick some butt again.
The team practices at NASA events pretty regularly and I encourage any evo fan or motorsports enthusiast to have a chat with Dave when he has a spare minute. Hes gone up the motorsports ladder without a storied last name or a ton of money. The acheivements hes been able to make are purely through driving talent and hard work.
This should be a good season for the evo and Im totally looking forward to the local races here in San Jose and Infineon.
