arrow: Yup stock pads and they were great. I wouldn't mind a bit more bite though, so I'm gonna upgrade to Hawk HP+ as my next set. I don't really know how to tell if I had brake fade or not but they felt pretty nice throughout.

Yudalicious thanks for that. I'll have to time myself next time I guess.

I own both (06MR and 06STI) and no way does a stock STI compare to a stock Evo MR as far as handling goes. Honesly it bothers me that these cars are compared as equals because it's a pretty large gap. Yes they are in the same "Class - AWD turbo 4cyl sports car" but the Evo takes everything to a different level. The Evo is very confidence inspiring to drive because it feels so good at and beyond it's limits whereas the STI feels awkward, over sprung, and well like if you push it too hard it's gonna flip or slide off the track. Not to mention the straights...

FYI: I just got the Ferrodo 2500 pads to replace my Brembo's and they feel great. I had Hawk HPS pads and slotted rotors on my prior car (03 Eclipse, Eibach, slotted rotors etc) and I would rate them as poor, even for street driving. I've also driven an Evo VIII with the Hawk pads and again I would say they were poor. The stock Brembos although generating tons of dust do a pretty decent job but they do fade on the track. I havent taken the Ferrodo's to the track but they feel great on the street (similar to the Brembo pads, with a little less dust).

4cdn: The guy could have just been a really good driver. Those things are quick as hell though... But given the conditions I should have been able to take him.

Mr. Evo IX: Thanks for some unbiased info from an owner of both cars Have you tracked both your cars?

Nope, just the Evo. Mostly I think if the STI had the Advans it might be better but the steering geometry still doesnt inspire confidence. We want to get it out to the track though because Rachel wants to do some HPDE.

That and I think the rear locker and DCCD in the STI causes it to "push" more than the Evo's limited slip / ACD setup

Re: original thread. If new M Roadster gave your EVO a run, then you and all of the STi drivers are hacks and the guy in the BMW was Michael Schumacher.

That's very interesting, coming from someone who owns both cars. I have owned 2 EVOs and have only driven STi's on dealer test drives, but I would have said the cars are pretty close. EVO's stock out of the box suspension is better, but you are going to rip the stock suspension out of either car to run on the track anyway, so that doesn't make much difference. STI has a little more stock hp.

Bottom line is they are both great cars, but I will take your word for it since you own both.

If you're talking about '06 Evo's & STi's - The Evo has more power. Look around at dyno's of the 2 cars stock - Mitsu pulled a fast one with the IX's . I think Shiv was seeing about a 10whp difference

Meh, I don't feel bad losing to a car that costs almost twice as much as mine.

On that theory, you shouldn't feel bad about being beaten by a Range Rover or a Hummer H2 either.

+1

I've driven both EVO and STi on the same auto-x course, same day and they were both very close. Heck I got a faster time with the STi because of the low end torque. On the race track they are about the same as well. My 05 EVO8, when it was stock-ish (catback) was getting similar times compared to an instructor driving his 06 STi (less than 1 sec apart).

So the answer to the original question is NO!

stock off the showroom floor, yeah there is a pretty decent difference in the handling between the evo and sti. the sti comes from the factory with almost positive camber up front which gives it that wobbly about to flip over kinda feeling, almost like if you take a corner real tight the front wheels will break off. all the sti needs is to get a decent alignment. put maximum neg. camber up front and zero out the toe and it puts it on par with the evo. both the sti's i've owned came from the factory with poor alignments. and i had an 03 evo before i had the sti's so i'm stating this from experience.
